Why is linguistics considered a science?
🔥 Asked 2 timesNU. 2016NU. 2018
Linguistics is the study of human language. Many scholars call it a science. It studies language in a careful and organised way, just like other sciences do.
(বাংলায়: ভাষাবিজ্ঞান মানুষের ভাষার অধ্যয়ন। এটি বিজ্ঞানের মতোই সুশৃঙ্খল ও যত্নের সঙ্গে ভাষা নিয়ে কাজ করে, তাই একে বিজ্ঞান বলা হয়।)
Data
Linguists collect real data. They listen to people and record how they speak. They also study written texts. They do not depend on guesses. For example, they record children's speech to learn how a child gains language. Real data is the base of every science. Anyone can check the same data again. This makes linguistic work reliable and open to check by all.
(বাংলায়: ভাষাবিজ্ঞানীরা বাস্তব ভাষার তথ্য সংগ্রহ করেন, অনুমানের ওপর নির্ভর করেন না। এটি সব বিজ্ঞানের ভিত্তি।)
Rules
Linguists look for patterns in language. From many examples, they find rules. For example, English adds -s to make a plural, as in books and pens. Another rule is that the subject comes before the verb. These rules are clear and general. They explain how language works, as a scientist explains nature. Rules help us predict new forms too, such as the plural of a new word like blog.
(বাংলায়: ভাষাবিজ্ঞানীরা অনেক উদাহরণ থেকে ভাষার নিয়ম খুঁজে বের করেন, যেমন বহুবচনে -s যোগ হয়। এই নিয়মগুলো ভাষার কাজ ব্যাখ্যা করে।)
Testing
A linguist first makes an idea. This idea is called a hypothesis. Then the linguist tests it with examples. For example, we may say that adjectives come before nouns in English. The phrase red car proves it, but car red does not. If the test fails, the linguist changes the idea. Testing is a key part of science. A good test uses clear examples, so the result is easy to see and repeat.
(বাংলায়: ভাষাবিজ্ঞানী প্রথমে একটি ধারণা (হাইপোথিসিস) তৈরি করেন, তারপর উদাহরণ দিয়ে যাচাই করেন। যাচাই বিজ্ঞানের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ।)
Objective view
Linguistics is objective. It describes language as it is, not as it should be. A linguist does not call one dialect good or bad. The study uses clear methods and avoids personal feelings. Other scholars can repeat the study and get the same result. This neutral way is also the way of science. Because of this, linguists can study Bangla, English and any language in the same fair way.
(বাংলায়: ভাষাবিজ্ঞান নিরপেক্ষ। এটি ভাষা যেমন আছে তেমনই বর্ণনা করে এবং অন্য গবেষকরাও একই ফল পেতে পারেন।)
So linguistics uses data, rules, testing and a neutral view. These are the marks of a science. Therefore, linguistics is rightly called the scientific study of language.
(বাংলায়: তথ্য, নিয়ম, যাচাই ও নিরপেক্ষ দৃষ্টি থাকায় ভাষাবিজ্ঞানকে ভাষার বৈজ্ঞানিক অধ্যয়ন বলা হয়।)

Exam Tips:
1) Write the four points: data, rules, testing, objective view.
2) Give one easy example for each point, like red car and car red.
3) Common mistake: do not say linguistics tells people how to speak. It only describes language.
