Christopher Marlowe wrote Doctor Faustus around 1592. It is a tragedy in five acts. Faustus is a famous doctor in Wittenberg. He masters law, medicine and theology. But he is not happy. He wants more power, pleasure and knowledge.
So he sells his soul to Lucifer for 24 years. Mephistophilis becomes his servant. The Good Angel asks him to repent. The Evil Angel pushes him to sin. Faustus enjoys magic, visits courts, and wastes time. At the last midnight, devils take him to hell.
মার্লো Doctor Faustus লেখেন ১৫৯২ সালের দিকে। এটি পাঁচ অঙ্কের ট্র্যাজেডি। ফস্টাস উইটেনবার্গের বিখ্যাত পণ্ডিত। আইন, চিকিৎসা ও ধর্মতত্ত্বে সে সেরা। তবু সে সুখী নয়। সে আরও ক্ষমতা, ভোগ ও জ্ঞান চায়। তাই ২৪ বছরের জন্য শয়তানের কাছে আত্মা বিক্রি করে। শেষ মধ্যরাতে শয়তানরা তাকে নরকে নিয়ে যায়।
The main theme is dangerous ambition. Faustus wants limitless knowledge. It means going beyond man's limit. He rejects God for magic. So pride destroys him. This is his hamartia. Hamartia means tragic fault.
The second theme is sin and damnation. Faustus signs with his own blood. He enjoys 24 years of pleasure. But he loses eternal life. The third theme is repentance. The Old Man calls him. But he delays again and again. Delay brings death.
মূল বিষয় বিপজ্জনক উচ্চাকাঙ্ক্ষা। ফস্টাস সীমাহীন জ্ঞান চায়। এটাই তার hamartia, অর্থাৎ ট্র্যাজিক ত্রুটি। দ্বিতীয় বিষয় পাপ ও নরকদণ্ড। তৃতীয় বিষয় অনুতাপ। বৃদ্ধ ও Good Angel তাকে ডাকে। কিন্তু সে বারবার দেরি করে। দেরিই মৃত্যু আনে।
Faustus is a tragic hero. He is learned but proud. He loves knowledge and power. He is brave at first. Later he becomes weak and afraid. Mephistophilis is a fallen angel. He serves Faustus but tells the truth about hell. He suffers in hell himself.
The Good Angel and Evil Angel show his inner fight. The Old Man is a symbol of faith. The Seven Sins show the ugliness of sin. Helen is a symbol of false beauty.
ফস্টাস ট্র্যাজিক নায়ক। সে পণ্ডিত কিন্তু অহংকারী। মেফিস্টোফিলিস পতিত দেবদূত। সে সেবা করে, কিন্তু নরকের সত্য বলে। Good Angel ও Evil Angel তার মনের লড়াই দেখায়। বৃদ্ধ বিশ্বাসের প্রতীক। Seven Sins পাপের কদর্যতা দেখায়।
Marlowe uses blank verse. Blank verse means unrhymed lines. It sounds grand and serious. He uses many soliloquies. Soliloquy means an alone-speech. It shows the mind of Faustus. The first and last ones are most famous.
He adds comic scenes with Wagner and the clown. They give relief. He uses symbols like blood, the clock, and Helen's kiss. Blood means the price of the soul. The clock means nearing death.
মার্লো blank verse ব্যবহার করেন। অর্থাৎ মিলহীন লাইন। তিনি অনেক soliloquy রাখেন। অর্থাৎ একা-বক্তৃতা। ওয়াগনার ও ভাঁড়ের হাস্য দৃশ্য বিরতি দেয়। রক্ত, ঘড়ি ও হেলেনের চুম্বনের মতো প্রতীক রাখেন।
Faustus shows the Renaissance spirit. It means love for knowledge and power. Man wants to conquer the world. Faustus wants magic too. This spirit is great but dangerous without God.
His inner conflict runs through the play. Reason says repent. Desire says enjoy. Desire wins. The end gives catharsis. Catharsis means deep pity and fear in us.
ফস্টাস রেনেসাঁ চেতনা দেখায়। অর্থাৎ জ্ঞান ও ক্ষমতার ভালোবাসা। ঈশ্বর ছাড়া এই চেতনা বিপজ্জনক। তার মনের লড়াই পুরো নাটকে চলে। বিবেক বলে অনুতাপ করো। লোভ বলে ভোগ করো। তাই শেষে catharsis হয়। অর্থাৎ মনে গভীর করুণা ও ভয় জাগে।
For Part-B (4 marks), write intro, 4 points and conclusion. Use 300-350 words. Best points are tragic hero, ambition, angels, and last scene. Mention one short quote. For Part-C (10 marks), write intro, 8 points and conclusion. Use 900+ words.
Must-mention scenes are the bond signing, Seven Sins show, and midnight clock. Must-use terms are tragic hero, hamartia, soliloquy and catharsis. Explain each term simply. End with a moral line.
Part-B (৪ নম্বর) এর জন্য ভূমিকা, ৪ পয়েন্ট ও উপসংহার লেখো। ৩০০-৩৫০ শব্দ রাখো। সেরা পয়েন্ট হলো নায়ক, উচ্চাকাঙ্ক্ষা, দেবদূত ও শেষ দৃশ্য। Part-C (১০ নম্বর) এর জন্য ৯০০+ শব্দ রাখো। চুক্তি স্বাক্ষর ও মধ্যরাতের ঘড়ি অবশ্যই লিখবে।
"Ah, Faustus, now hast thou but one bare hour to live, and then thou must be damned perpetually!"
Faustus speaks these lines alone at midnight. Only one hour is left. He is full of fear. He asks time to stop. But time never stops. A great doctor becomes a crying child.
Use this in tragic hero or last scene questions. It proves delay kills hope.
