Discuss/Describe the role and function of Chorus in King Oedipus / Oedipus Rex.

Introduction

In Greek tragedy, the Chorus was a group of performers who sang and danced between the scenes. In Oedipus Rex, the Chorus is made up of the old elders of Thebes. Sophocles uses a small Chorus of fifteen members, smaller than the old Greek custom. In this play, the Chorus is not just a decoration between scenes. It acts in the story, comments on the events, guides the audience, and teaches the final lesson. It is like the heart of the play, which connects the actors with the audience.
1️⃣ The Voice of the People of Thebes
The Chorus represents the ordinary citizens of Thebes. They are the elders of the city, so they speak for the whole population. In the opening song (the Parados), they pray to the gods to save the city from the terrible plague. They describe the suffering of the people, the dying crops, and the deadly disease. Their fear and pain are the fear and pain of every citizen. When Oedipus comes out to them, they speak for all Thebans who look to their king for help. So through the Chorus, the audience hears the voice of the whole city.
2️⃣ A Real Actor in the Story
The Chorus in Oedipus Rex does not stay outside the story; it takes part in the action. It begs Oedipus to save the city from the plague. When Oedipus and Teiresias quarrel bitterly, the Chorus respectfully begs the king to calm down. When Oedipus becomes angry with Creon and wants to punish him, the Chorus stops the king and saves Creon's life. It also advises Oedipus again and again not to search further for the killer of Laius. These are not small acts — the Chorus tries to change the course of events. So it is a character in the drama, not just a singer.
3️⃣ The Ideal Spectator
The Chorus reacts to every event exactly as a thoughtful spectator should. It hopes, fears, doubts and wonders with the audience. After Teiresias makes his terrible charge, the Chorus is shocked but refuses to believe without proof. When Oedipus accuses Creon without evidence, the Chorus says the king has spoken in anger and without judgement. When the truth begins to come out, it expresses fear and pity step by step. In this way, the Chorus becomes the ideal spectator — a model of how the audience should feel while watching the play. Its feelings guide our feelings.
4️⃣ The Moral and Religious Guide
The Chorus carries the religious voice of the play. Its odes again and again teach faith in the gods and warn against pride. When Jocasta suggests that prophecies may fail, the Chorus is alarmed. In one of its great odes, it sings that if such prophecies are ignored, men should stop worshipping the gods. It declares that only the gods — Zeus and Apollo — know the truth, and no man can escape their will. It also warns that insolence and proud words bring ruin. Through these songs, Sophocles places the religious and moral teaching of the tragedy in the mouth of the Chorus.
5️⃣ Maker of Atmosphere and Suspense
The Chorus creates the mood of every scene and increases the tension. Its opening song fills the stage with the dark atmosphere of plague and death. Later, in the second stasimon, it wonders about the birth of Oedipus — was his mother a nymph or a mountain spirit? Was he born of Pan or Apollo? These beautiful, anxious questions raise suspense just before the shepherd reveals the terrible truth. After the recognition scene, its song of horror makes the shock even deeper. So the Chorus works like the background music of the play — it prepares our hearts for every fall.
6️⃣ The Chorus and the Structure of the Play
The Chorus also gives the play its shape. Greek tragedy moves in episodes (dialogue scenes) and stasima (choral songs). In Oedipus Rex, after every major episode, the Chorus sings an ode that comments on what has just happened. The play opens with the Parados and ends with the Exodos, both led by the Chorus. These songs divide the action into clear parts, give the audience time to think, and keep a steady rhythm from beginning to end. Without the Chorus, the structure of the play would lose its balance and its musical movement.
7️⃣ Lyrical Beauty and Pathos
The songs of the Chorus are the most beautiful and emotional parts of the play. They give the tragedy its poetry, music and deep feeling. The saddest example is at the end, when the Chorus sees the blinded Oedipus coming out of the palace. It breaks into a song of pity and terror, mourning the fall of the great king. This song, together with the whole story, creates the catharsis — the purging of pity and fear — that Aristotle praised. The suffering of Oedipus touches us more deeply because the Chorus sings our sorrow for us.
8️⃣ Speaker of the Final Lesson
At the end of the play, the Chorus speaks the universal moral of the story. Its last words teach that no man should be called happy before his death:

"Count no man happy till he dies,
free of pain at last."

With this one line, the Chorus lifts the story of one man from Thebes to the level of all human life. The message is simple and unforgettable: human fortune is uncertain, fate is stronger than man, and the final judgement on a life comes only at the end.
(বাংলায়: শেষে Chorus নাটকের চিরন্তন শিক্ষা দেয় — "Count no man happy till he dies..."

Conclusion

To conclude, the Chorus in Oedipus Rex is many things in one body. It is the people of Thebes who suffer the plague; an actor who tries to shape the events; an ideal spectator who feels with the audience; a religious guide who teaches faith and warns against pride; a maker of suspense; the source of the play's poetry; and finally the voice of its universal lesson. Sophocles did not use the Chorus as an old tradition — he made it a living, working part of the tragedy. That is why the Chorus remains one of the finest examples of its kind in Greek drama.

Consider the protagonist of "Oedipus Rex" as a tragic hero on the basis of the Sophoclean concept. / Discuss King Oedipus as a tragic hero.
🔥 Asked 2 timesNU. 2015NU. 2022

Introduction

King Oedipus is the central figure of Sophocles' Oedipus Rex and one of the finest tragic heroes in world drama. A tragic hero is a great person who falls from a high position because of a weakness in his own character. Aristotle described such a hero in his Poetics, and Oedipus is the clearest example of it. He is a king, a saviour of his people and a man of great mind — yet he falls to the lowest depth of suffering. He wins our respect as a king and our tears as a sufferer. His story shows both the greatness and the weakness of human nature, and that is why the play never grows old.
1️⃣ Noble Birth and High Position
Oedipus is a true aristocrat of fortune. Born the son of King Laius and Queen Jocasta of Thebes, he is brought up as the prince of Corinth, and he wins the throne of Thebes by his own brilliance, freeing the city from the Sphinx. The priest addresses him as 'greatest in all men's eyes', and the people trust him as their saviour. Aristotle says that a tragedy must show the fall of a man great in rank and worth, so that his fall can be deeply felt. Oedipus stands at the very top — king, husband and father — and that is why his fall breaks our hearts.
2️⃣ A Good Man Essentially
Oedipus is not a wicked man, and this matters greatly in tragedy. He sincerely loves his people and promises them the end of the plague at any cost: 'Your pain touches each of me alone.' He is a caring father, a faithful husband and a responsible ruler. Aristotle insists that the tragic hero must not be a villain; his ruin must come from some error, not from evil. Oedipus fits this rule perfectly: his two great crimes were done in complete ignorance, and his heart always wanted to do right. Because he is good, we pity him instead of hating him, and because he is like us, his fate frightens us.
3️⃣ Hamartia: Pride and Anger
Yet Oedipus carries a fatal weakness — his hamartia. He is proud, hasty and hot-tempered. At the place where three roads meet, an old man pushes him aside, and in a flash of anger Oedipus kills him and his attendants. A cooler man would have stepped aside; Oedipus strikes. When Teiresias speaks the bitter truth, the king bursts into rage, insults the prophet and suspects innocent Creon of a plot without a shred of proof. His pride and temper push him faster toward his ruin. So the seed of the tragedy lies in his own nature, as well as in the prophecy of the gods.
4️⃣ Fate and Free Will
Oedipus's story also shows a great struggle between fate and free will. The oracle of Apollo said that the child of Laius would kill his father and marry his mother. So Laius and Jocasta ordered the baby to be killed, and Oedipus himself later left Corinth to escape his supposed parents. Yet every attempt to avoid the prophecy only helped to fulfil it — the men spared the baby's life, and his flight from Corinth led him straight to his real father and mother. This shows the Sophoclean idea that fate is powerful, but the hero still fights it with his own free will. Oedipus is not a puppet of the gods; his own choices carry him to his end.
5️⃣ His Sincere Search for Truth
Oedipus's greatness shines most in his fearless search for the truth. The god wanted him to remain blind to his own identity, but he forces the truth out of everyone — Teiresias, Jocasta, the Corinth messenger and at last the trembling shepherd. He could have stopped the inquiry many times; Jocasta even begs him with tears to give it up. But he answers that, son of Fortune as he is, he will not rest until he knows who he is. He chooses truth over safety, light over comfort. This passion for truth, even at the price of his own life, is the noblest quality in him and the sign of a truly great soul.
6️⃣ Reversal and Recognition
Oedipus experiences the two great tragic moments at the same instant. The reversal comes when the message from Corinth, which he expects to bring comfort, brings instead his complete destruction. The recognition follows immediately in the same scene: he learns that he himself is the murderer he has cursed and the son of his own victim. In one moment the saviour of Thebes becomes the cause of its pollution, and the judge becomes the criminal. This sudden fall from the highest light to the darkest depth is the very essence of tragic heroism — and Oedipus suffers it before our eyes.
7️⃣ He Punishes Himself
When the whole truth stands naked before him, Oedipus does not run away or blame the gods. He judges himself more severely than any court could. He blinds himself with the golden pins taken from Jocasta's body, so that the eyes which failed to see the truth may never see again, and he accepts exile from the city he saved. He also thinks of his children and begs Creon to care for them. A weaker man would have denied everything; Oedipus takes the full weight of his acts upon himself. This self-punishment gives the fallen king a strange and moving dignity.
8️⃣ He Arouses Pity and Fear
The final test of a tragic hero is the feeling he creates in the audience, and this feeling is called catharsis. Oedipus passes this test completely. He suffers far more than his fault deserves, so we pity him; he is a great man whose fall could be the fall of anyone, so we fear for all human fortune. When the blinded king gropes his way out of the palace, the Chorus sings its sorrow for him, and every spectator feels the same tears. Pity for the man and fear for the human condition — these two emotions are Aristotle's proof of true tragedy, and Oedipus rouses both to the highest degree.

Conclusion

To conclude, Oedipus has everything that a Sophoclean tragic hero requires — noble birth and high position, an essentially good heart, a fatal weakness of pride and anger, a struggle with fate, a fearless search for truth, a sudden and terrible fall, and the power to fill the audience with pity and fear. His greatness lies in his love of truth; his ruin, in his own character; his dignity, in his acceptance of punishment. He falls as a criminal, but he rises as a sufferer worthy of honour. That is why Aristotle and all later critics have taken Oedipus as the very picture of the tragic hero, and why his story will never cease to move us.

🔥 Asked 2 timesNU. 2016NU. 2023

Introduction

Oedipus Rex is often called the perfect model of a classical tragedy. A classical tragedy, in the Greek sense, shows the fall of a great person through serious action, keeps the unities of time and place, uses a chorus, and produces pity and fear in the audience. Aristotle studied this very play in his Poetics and found in it almost every quality of an ideal tragedy — a perfect plot, a noble hero, reversal and recognition, and a working chorus. Later critics have taken it as the standard by which all other tragedies are measured. Let us examine, point by point, how the play fulfils each classical requirement.
1️⃣ Serious Action and Unity of Plot
The play deals with a serious and weighty theme — the ruin of a king because of an old, hidden crime. It has one main plot only: the search for the killer of Laius. There is no secondary love-story, no comic side-track, no diversion of any kind. Every scene, every dialogue and every clue moves this single action forward, from the plague at the beginning to the blinding at the end. Aristotle demanded this unity of action in a perfect tragedy, and here it is complete. The plot is also complete in itself, for it has a beginning, a middle and an end that naturally follow one another. Everything is linked by cause and effect, so the play flows like one unbroken action.
2️⃣ The Three Unities
Secondly, the play keeps the three classical unities to perfection. The unity of action we have just seen. The unity of time is strictly kept, because the whole tragedy happens within a single day — from sunrise to sunset, as the classical rules demanded. The unity of place is also kept, because every scene takes place before the royal palace of Thebes; whatever happens elsewhere is only reported by messengers. This double tightness of time and place gives the play great speed and concentration. Nothing diffuses, nothing digresses; the action drives forward like an arrow toward its mark. Very few tragedies of any age observe these laws so cleanly.
3️⃣ A Great Hero with a Fatal Flaw
A classical tragedy needs a tragic hero — a great person with a small but fatal weakness in his nature. Oedipus is a king and a saviour of Thebes, yet he is proud, hasty and hot-tempered. His hamartia shows itself at the crossroads, where he kills an old man in a moment of anger, and again in his groundless suspicion of Creon. Aristotle said that the hero must be neither perfectly good nor openly evil; he must stand between the two, so that we can pity and fear for him. Oedipus stands exactly there — noble enough to deserve pity, and flawed enough to bring his own ruin. He is not merely a victim of fate; he is also, in part, the maker of his fall.
4️⃣ Dramatic Irony
The whole play is also built upon dramatic irony, one of the finest devices of classical tragedy. The audience knows from the very beginning who Oedipus is and what he has done, while the king himself knows nothing. When Oedipus curses the murderer of Laius and calls down suffering upon him, he is unknowingly cursing himself. When he promises to drive out the criminal, he is pronouncing his own exile. Again and again the people praise him as the saviour of Thebes, while we watch the truth moving step by step toward his ruin. This irony fills every scene with suspense and sorrow, and it makes the tragedy far deeper than any mere story of revenge.
5️⃣ Reversal and Recognition
The play also shows the two greatest devices of Greek tragedy — reversal (peripeteia) and recognition (anagnorisis) — working together in a single moment. The messenger from Corinth comes with comforting news: Polybus is dead, so the old prophecy seems broken at last. But to prove that Oedipus is not the true son of Polybus, he mentions the old shepherd of Laius — and the whole truth rushes out. In one instant the saviour becomes the sinner, and the comforting news becomes the cause of ruin. Aristotle praised this very play for combining reversal and recognition so perfectly at one point of the action. The scene of the Corinthian messenger remains the most famous example of these devices in all European drama.
6️⃣ Catharsis: Pity and Fear
The play produces the catharsis that every classical tragedy must produce. We pity Oedipus because he suffers far more than his guilt deserves; we fear because the fall of so great a man warns us of the frailty of all human fortune. As the play moves forward, these feelings rise step by step with each new discovery. The final scene — the blinded king lamenting before the Chorus — brings them to their height, and then the ending washes them away. The audience leaves the theatre purified and softened, freed from the weight of pity and terror. This purging of the emotions is the very purpose of classical tragedy, and no play of Greek literature achieves it more completely.
7️⃣ The Chorus and Religious Spirit
The play also uses the Chorus in the true classical manner. The elders of Thebes sing the Parados at the opening, a stasimon after every major episode, and the Exodos at the end. Their songs divide the action into clear parts, comment on the events, and teach the lesson of the play. The whole work breathes faith in the gods and their prophecies: the oracles of Apollo come true in every detail, and man is forced to learn the limits of his power. This religious seriousness — not mere fear, but deep reverence for divine law — is the very mark of a classical tragedy. The Chorus, in this way, is not an ornament but the living conscience of the play.
8️⃣ Serious and Dignified Style
Lastly, the style of the play is serious, poetic and dignified, as classical tragedy demands. There is no low comedy anywhere; even the quarrels are grand and the insults are dignified. The dialogues, the debates and the choral songs all rise above everyday speech, and the language of suffering itself becomes high poetry. The tone always matches the greatness of the subject, the rank of the hero and the solemnity of the theme. In form, in structure and in spirit, Oedipus Rex remains classical tragedy at its very best — the model that Aristotle held before every later writer.

Conclusion

To conclude, Oedipus Rex satisfies every demand of classical tragedy — a serious theme, unity of action, time and place, a noble hero with a fatal flaw, dramatic irony, reversal combined with recognition, the purging of pity and fear, a working chorus, and a dignified poetic style. This is why Aristotle took it as the model tragedy, and why it is still performed after two and a half thousand years. As a classical tragedy, it has never been surpassed; it remains the highest example of the form in the whole of world literature, and the standard against which all later tragedies are judged.

🔥 Asked 3 timesNU. 2017NU. 2019NU. 2022

Introduction

Dramatic irony is a device in which the audience knows a truth that the character on the stage does not know. So the words and acts of the character carry a second, hidden meaning for the spectators, while the speaker remains blind to it. Oedipus Rex is the greatest example of this device in world drama. Almost every word that Oedipus speaks has a double meaning, because the audience knows his true identity from the very beginning, while he is still searching for the murderer of Laius. The play is, in fact, one long ironic situation from beginning to end, and the tragic effect of the play depends on this gap between knowledge and ignorance.
1️⃣ Irony of the Opening Scene
The play opens with the plage-stricken people sitting before the pal-ace, with branches of prayer in their hands. Oedipus comes out, calls them 'O my children' and promises to find the cure for their suffering. He does not know that he himself is the cause of the plage — the saviour of Thebes is its real pollution. The audience knows this from the prophecy of Apollo, so every cons-oling word of the king cuts us with its hidden meaning. The very address 'my children' is ironic, because the man who spe-aks is bound to the people by a secret pollution. The whole opening scene is thus soaked in dramatic irony before the plot even begins.
2️⃣ The Curse of the King upon Himself
The most terrible irony comes when Oedipus de-clares his public curse on the murderer of Laius. He commands that no citizen give the killer shelter or spe-ak to him, and he prays that the guilty man's life be consumed in evil and misery. Without knowing it, the king is cur-sing himself, for he himself is the very man he condemns. Every word of his own decree falls back upon his own head, and the audience feels the dark humour of fate in every line. What is worse, he promises to fight for the dead king as if Laius were his own father — and the dead king is real-y his father. This self-curse is the cent-ral irony of the whole play.
3️⃣ Teiresias: The Blind Who Sees
The quarrel with Teiresias is built complete-y on irony. The prophet is physical-y blind but sees the whole truth clear-y; the king has perfect eyes but is blind to his own identity. Oedipus mocks the old man's blind-ness and boasts of his own sharp in-telligence, yet within a single day he will destroy his own eyes for the very opposite reason — because they failed to see the truth when seeing could have saved him. Teiresias answers patient-y that the king has sight yet cannot see in what evil he lives. By the end of the day the positions of sight and blind-ness are exact-y reversed: the blind seer was right, and the seeing king was wrong. Through this reversal Sophocles proves that real sight is inner vision, not mere eyes.
4️⃣ Irony of His Marriage and Children
Oedipus's marriage itself is the greatest irony of the play. He is proud of his beautiful and noble wife, never suspecting that she is his own mother. He loves his children, never knowing that they are at once his children and his half-brothers and half-sisters. The wedding that raised him to the throne of Thebes was real-y the first step towards his ruin, and the fami-y he boasts of is the very fami-y the prophecy had condemned. Sophocles lets the audience carry this terrible knowledge from the beginning, so that every tender and respectful word between Oedipus and Jocasta fills the spectators with silent horror. No other scene in Greek tragedy is so quiet-y terrible.
5️⃣ Irony of His Pride in His Own Wisdom
Oedipus takes pride in the one victory that made him famous — ridding Thebes of the Sphinx by solving its riddle. He reminds the city again and again that he did what the blind prophet could not do, and he claims that his own intelligence will save the people once more. Yet the very mind that once saved the city now drives him toward his ruin, because his sharp reasoning refuses to stop the dangerous search for truth. The riddle-solver cannot so-lve the riddle of his own life: he solved the riddle of the Sphinx but remains a riddle to himself. The wisdom he boasts of becomes the very evidence of his guilt, and his intellectual pride blinds him to every warning around him.
6️⃣ Jocasta's Comforting Words Reveal the Truth
Jocasta tries to calm Oedipus down by proving that prophecies often fail. She tells him that Laius was killed by robbers at a place where three roads met — not by his own son, as the oracle had said. But this very attempt at comfort gives Oedipus the first dead-y clue: he remembers killing an old man at just such a crossroads. Her words of peace become the road to discovery. She comforts him to give him hope, yet every word she spe-aks drags the truth nearer. This is dramatic irony of the most pain-ful kind — the comforter becomes the revealer of ruin.
7️⃣ The Messenger's Good News Destroys
The messenger from Corin-th arrives with the happiest possible news: King Polybus is dead, so Oedipus can never kill his father. But to prove that Oedipus has nothing to fear, he reveals that Oedipus was not Polybus's real son — a shepherd of Laius had handed over a baby on Mount Cithaeron. The trail now leads straight to the queen and the old shepherd, and the end is near. The messenger comes to end all fear, and he leaves the king utter-y destroyed. His very good news is the instrument of ruin, and his kind intention brings down the whole pal-ace. This is the sharpest stroke of dramatic irony in the entire play.
8️⃣ Sight after Blindness
At the end, the irony completes its full circle. Oedipus, who could not see the truth with his own eyes, blinds himself with the pins of Jocasta's dress — and now, without eyes at all, he sees everything clear-y: his birth, his crime and his destiny. The man who m-ocked a blind prophet becomes blind himself, and only then tru-y understands what he has done. His final words are full of this hard-won knowledge, and he accepts his suffering without excuse. Sophocles teaches through irony that physical sight is not knowledge, and that truth always comes out at last, however long it may remain hidden. The blinded king, in his darkness, sees more than he ever saw in the light.

Conclusion

To conclude, dramatic irony is not a decoration in Oedipus Rex — it is the very backbone of the play. The story moves entire-y on the gap between what Oedipus believes about himself and what the audience knows to be true. His curse, his marriage, his pride, Jocasta's comfort and the messenger's news — all turn against him in the end. Through this device Sophocles proves his deepest lesson: man sees little, but the gods see everything, and truth always comes to light in the end. For this reason, critics right-y call Oedipus Rex the most ironic play ever written.

Begin by defining dramatic irony in one simple sentence — the examiner wants the definition first.

The curse scene is the single best example; describe it in two lines of detail.

Second best: the Corin-th messenger whose good news ruins the king.

It is safe to paraphrase the curse (the killer must "waste away in evil misery") instead of quoting exact-y.

End with the reversal of sight and blind-ness — it links irony to the main theme of the play.

Would you consider "Oedipus Rex" as a tragedy of fate or a tragedy of character? Give reasons for your answer.
🔥 Asked 2 timesNU. 2018NU. 2021

Introduction

A famous debate runs through every study of Oedipus Rex: is it a tragedy of fate or a tragedy of character? A tragedy of fate shows a man destroyed by powers outside his own control — destiny, oracles, the gods. A tragedy of character shows a man destroyed by his own weakness — pride, anger, a fatal error. The truth is that Sophocles has made the play both at once: fate sets the stage, but the character of Oedipus walks upon it. Let us weigh the evidence for each side carefully, and then see what Sophocles really intended.

1️⃣ The Case for Fate: The Prophecy
The strongest proof of fate is the prophecy itself. Before Oedipus was even born, Apollo's oracle declared that the child of Laius would kill his father and marry his mother. Neither Laius, nor Jocasta, nor Oedipus could escape it, however hard they tried. Every step they took to avoid the prophecy — exposing the baby on Cithaeron, fleeing from Corinth — led them straight into its fulfilment. The prophecy was fixed before the play began; the characters do not create their destiny, they only walk the road already built for them. The oracle even names the exact crimes, murder and incest, long before anyone commits them, which can only mean that the gods had written the ending in advance.
2️⃣ Fate Unchanged by Struggle
Secondly, nothing in the play changes the prophecy by a single hair. Laius orders the baby to be exposed — but the baby is saved by a pitying shepherd and carried to Corinth. Oedipus leaves Corinth to protect Polybus and Merope — and runs straight into his real father at the crossroads. Jocasta tries to comfort herself that oracles fail, and her own words prove the oracle true. The more the characters struggle against fate, the closer they come to it. Human freedom struggles; the divine word remains fixed. This pattern shows clearly that no human effort can break the will of the gods, and this is the very essence of a tragedy of fate.
3️⃣ Crimes Done in Ignorance
Another strong proof of the power of fate is that Oedipus commits his crimes without knowing them. He kills Laius not knowing that the old man is his father, and he marries Jocasta not knowing that she is his mother. He never chooses his sins — the sins arrive upon him like accidents. If a man can be ruined for acts he did not even know he was doing, then his ruin must come from powers beyond his own will. His intentions at every moment were honourable; he killed in self-defence and married in good faith. It is fate, not wickedness, that turned his innocent actions into crimes and then punished him for them.
4️⃣ The Case for Character: Hasty Temper
But the other side of the debate is equally strong. Oedipus is not a helpless puppet of the gods; he has a proud, hasty and hot-tempered nature of his own. At the place where three roads meet, an old man pushes him aside, and in a flash of anger Oedipus kills him together with his attendants. A calmer man would have moved aside and walked on; Oedipus strikes instead. The fatal killing — the very heart of the whole tragedy — comes from his own temper, not from any divine command. The gods prophesied that a murder would happen, but it was Oedipus's own anger that chose the victim and the manner of the deed. His hand did what his character commanded.
5️⃣ Pride Refuses to Stop the Search
Again and again the people around Oedipus warn him to stop, but his pride refuses. Teiresias tells him plainly that he is the murderer; Jocasta begs him with tears to give up the inquiry; the shepherd trembles before him. Yet Oedipus drives on, because his pride as the solver of the Sphinx demands a complete answer whatever it costs. Nobody forces him to continue; no god holds his hand — he insists himself, against the prayers of his wife. The oracle foretold the fall, but his own insistence digs the pit and then leaps into it. Such a headlong rush toward self-destruction is the mark of character, not of fate.
6️⃣ His Free Will in Seeking the Truth
There is also the plain fact that the gods foretold but never forced. Apollo announced that Oedipus would kill his father and marry his mother, but no god put the sword into his hand at the crossroads, and no god led him to the marriage bed. He chose to strike; he chose to accept the throne and the queen of Thebes; and later he chose to go on with the inquiry though Jocasta pleaded with him to stop. Even his final punishment, the blinding and the exile, is his own free choice, made by no command of heaven. The prophecy gave the events a frame, but inside that frame the hero moved by his own free will. This freedom of action is the strongest argument that the play is also, and deeply, a tragedy of character.
7️⃣ Fate Works Through Character
The true answer is that in this play fate and character are woven into one fabric. The prophecy declares what will happen, but the way it happens passes through the innermost nature of Oedipus. His pride, his anger and his restless love of truth are exactly the roads by which fate travels to its end. As the old saying goes, character is destiny, and here fate uses character as its instrument. The same events are at once foretold and freely walked into: the crossroads killing is both the fulfilment of the oracle and the work of a hot temper. Neither power can be separated from the other without pulling the whole play apart.
8️⃣ The Balance Sophocles Intended
Lastly, Sophocles himself clearly intended both powers to stand on the stage together. If fate alone destroyed Oedipus, the play would be cruel and we would learn nothing from it; if character alone destroyed him, the gods and the oracles would become empty decorations. By joining the two, the dramatist created a tragedy that is at once religious and human — fate fixes the event, character fixes the manner of the fall. The audience feels the weight of destiny and the responsibility of man in the same breath. This double vision is the signature of Sophoclean tragedy and the reason the play has never lost its power.

Conclusion

To conclude, Oedipus Rex is a tragedy of fate that works through a tragedy of character. The prophecy was fixed before the hero's birth, but the road to its fulfilment was paved by his own pride, anger and restless search for truth. Neither single answer is complete: take away fate, and the play loses its religious depth; take away character, and the hero loses his dignity and his moral weight. The greatness of the play lies precisely in the union of the two — fate sets the trap, and character springs it.

Evaluate 'Oedipus Rex' as a tragedy.
NU. 2019

Introduction

Oedipus Rex is not only a famous play — it is the standard by which tragedy itself is measured. Aristotle built his definition of tragedy in the Poetics mainly on this very play: a serious and complete action, in dignified language, showing the fall of a great person, and producing pity and fear in the audience. Every element that the theory of tragedy demands can be found here in its purest form — the plot, the hero, the emotions, the chorus. Let us test the play, point by point, against each element of the definition, and see how fully it answers.
1️⃣ A Serious and Noble Theme
A true tragedy must deal with serious matters — life, death, guilt and destiny. Oedipus Rex takes the heaviest of them all: a king who hunts a criminal and discovers that the criminal is himself. The theme is universal; no one can hide from truth, and no one can escape the consequences of his own acts. The seriousness never breaks anywhere in the play — there is no low comedy, no trivial talk, no cheap effect. From the first word to the last, the subject remains worthy of the highest poetry. Even the messenger scenes, which in a lesser play would be mere reporting, are charged with meaning and dread.
2️⃣ A Great Hero with Hamartia
Secondly, the play gives us a true tragic hero in the full Aristotelian sense. Oedipus stands at the top of human fortune — king of Thebes, saviour of the city from the Sphinx, proud husband and father. Yet he carries within himself a small but fatal weakness: pride and a hot temper, his hamartia. His fall comes partly from this weakness and partly from the prophecy of the gods, and it is exactly this mixture that makes him a human figure we can understand. Because he is great, his fall is great; because he is flawed and human, his fall is believable and moving. A perfect hero could never be a tragic figure.
3️⃣ A Perfect Tragic Plot
Thirdly, the plot is the finest example of tragic construction in the whole of drama. It opens with a problem — the plague — and moves by strict cause and effect to the final discovery. There is one single action, one day, one place; nothing is wasted and nothing is accidental. Every scene grows out of the previous one, and every clue leads directly to the next. Even the crimes of the past are revealed through the inquiry of the present — past and present are woven together into one chain. Aristotle praised the plot of this play as beyond improvement, and that praise has never been reversed by any later critic.
4️⃣ Dramatic Irony Throughout
Fourthly, the whole play is soaked in dramatic irony, which gives the tragedy its peculiar terror. From the very first scene the audience knows who Oedipus is, while he does not; so every promise, boast and curse of the king carries a hidden meaning that he himself cannot hear. When he curses the murderer of Laius, he curses himself; when he promises to save the city, he is the source of its pollution. This irony turns the audience into silent witnesses of a doom that the hero walks toward blindly. No other device creates such constant suspense and such deep pity, and Sophocles uses it at every step of the action.
5️⃣ Reversal and Recognition Together
Fifthly, the play unites the two great tragic devices in one supreme moment. The reversal comes when the messenger of Corinth arrives with the news that Polybus is dead — the news meant to comfort Oedipus, which instead begins his destruction. The recognition follows in the same scene: he learns that he himself is the murderer he has cursed, and the son of the man he killed. Aristotle wrote that the finest tragedy joins reversal and recognition in the same instant, and this play does exactly that. The rescuer discovers that he himself needs rescuing; the judge finds that he is the criminal.
6️⃣ Pity, Fear and Catharsis
Sixthly, the play produces the famous tragic emotions in their purest form and then purifies them. We pity Oedipus because he suffers far more than his guilt deserves; we fear because the fall of so great a man is the fall of any man — human fortune is fragile. When the blinded king staggers out of the palace, these feelings rise to their height, and the choral laments carry them away. This purging of pity and fear is what Aristotle meant by catharsis, the final purpose of tragedy. The audience leaves the theatre deeply moved yet strangely at peace — the mark of a perfect tragic experience.
7️⃣ Religious Depth and the Chorus
Seventhly, the play keeps alive the religious spirit without which a Greek tragedy cannot exist. The gods prophesy, the prophecies come true in every detail, and man is forced to learn the limits of his power before divine law. The Chorus of Theban elders sings between the scenes, comments on the action, and speaks the final moral of the play. Its closing words — that no man should be counted happy until he has passed the end of his life without pain — give the tragedy its universal meaning. The play thus rises above the story of one suffering king into a meditation on all human life.
8️⃣ A Dignified and Poetic Style
Lastly, the language of the play is dignified, poetic and solemn throughout, exactly as a classical tragedy requires. The dialogues, the debates and the choral songs all rise above everyday speech; even the quarrels sound grand, and the insults keep their dignity. The language of suffering becomes the language of high poetry, as when the blinded king laments his fate. In theme, in structure, in emotion and in style, the play answers every question that the theory of tragedy can ask. It is for this completeness that Oedipus Rex remained the model of tragedy for twenty-five centuries.

Conclusion

To conclude, Oedipus Rex is a tragedy in the fullest sense of the word — serious in theme, noble in hero, flawless in plot, rich in dramatic irony, powerful in pity and fear, religious in spirit and dignified in style. It is the very play on which Aristotle built his theory of tragedy, and it still stands as the model every later writer tried to follow. If one play can teach what tragedy is, it is this one; if one hero can show what tragic greatness means, it is Oedipus. The title of the perfect tragedy belongs to it alone.

How does Oedipus finally find out the real identity of the killer of Laius?
NU. 2020

Introduction

The whole plot of Oedipus Rex is one long investigation, the search for the murderer of King Laius of Thebes. Like a perfect detective story, the play moves clue by clue until the shocking answer appears: the hunter is himself the criminal. The discovery happens in clear, logical steps, and each step brings Oedipus closer to a truth he is afraid to face. He forces the truth out of every witness by his own insistence, the oracle, the prophet, the queen, the messenger and the old shepherd. Let us follow the chain of discovery step by step.

The search begins with the word of the Oracle of Delphi. When a deadly plague destroys the city of Thebes, Oedipus sends his brother-in-law Creon to Apollo's temple to ask how the city can be saved. Creon returns with the answer: the plague will end only when the murderer of Laius is driven out of Thebes, or punished with death. So the king takes upon himself the duty of finding the killer, and makes a solemn royal promise to save the city again. He does not know that he is the murderer he seeks. The oracle's command sets the whole chain of discovery in motion, and it turns the play into a detective story in which the detective is the wanted man himself.
2️⃣ The Proclamation and Curse
Oedipus then issues a public proclamation before the whole city. He commands that anyone who knows the murderer must speak; he forbids every citizen from giving the killer shelter or even a word; and he curses the guilty man to waste away in evil misery. He sends also for Teiresias, the blind prophet, hoping that divine sight will name the criminal at once. The proclamation is a formal royal act performed in the presence of the people, and the curse calls the gods themselves to witness it. Every word of this public decree returns upon the head of the king himself, for he is the man he condemns. It is one of the most terrible ironies in all drama: the judge pronounces his own doom.
3️⃣ The Warning of Teiresias
Teiresias first refuses to speak, for the truth, he says, is terrible. But when Oedipus grows angry and insults him and his art, the prophet bursts out in anger: Oedipus himself is the murderer he is seeking. Oedipus rejects the accusation in fury, suspects a political plot of Creon, and drives the prophet away. Yet the seed of doubt is now planted, and the audience, who already know the truth from the oracle, see the king refusing the very light he asked for. This scene shows the tragic blindness of Oedipus: the truth is offered to him directly, but his pride and anger shut the door. Later every word of Teiresias proves true, and the king remembers the prophecy with horror.
4️⃣ Jocasta's Story of the Crossroads
The next clue comes from Jocasta, who tries to comfort her husband by proving that prophets can be wrong. She tells him that Laius was killed, not by his son, but by robbers at a place where three roads meet. The words terrify Oedipus: he remembers standing at just such a crossroads and killing an old man who pushed him from the road. Suspicion is born at once, and he sends for the only surviving witness of the murder, an old shepherd of Laius. This is the true turning point of the discovery, for here the private memory of the king meets the public crime of the state. From this moment the fear of Oedipus grows with every sentence, and the net begins to close around him.
5️⃣ The Messenger from Corinth
The messenger from Corinth arrives with what seems the most joyful news possible: King Polybus is dead, and so Oedipus can never kill his father. But then, to prove that Oedipus has nothing to fear, the messenger adds: Oedipus was not the real son of Polybus and Merope, a shepherd of Laius had given him the baby on Mount Cithaeron. The comfort turns into terror; the trail now leads straight back to Thebes, to the queen and to the old shepherd. The kindly messenger, who came to remove all fear, becomes the instrument of ruin. This is the sharpest stroke of dramatic irony in the play: good news that destroys, kindness that kills.
6️⃣ The Queen Sees the Truth First
Before the old shepherd even speaks, Jocasta suddenly understands everything. Realizing what the messenger's words mean, she cries out and begs Oedipus to stop the investigation, but he refuses in his pride. She rushes from the stage without another word to the audience's horror, and the silent meaning of her flight is unmistakable: the truth is real. Her desperate attempt to stop the search is the final proof that the discovery cannot be prevented. She chooses death over the shame of the revealed truth and takes her own life, hanging herself in the palace. The queen, who tried to prove that oracles lie, is the first to accept by her action that the oracles have come true.
7️⃣ The Old Shepherd's Testimony
The old shepherd is the last and decisive witness. He is the very man who received the baby years ago, and the only survivor who saw the killing of Laius. At first he begs to be released, but Oedipus threatens him with torture and death. Then the old man confesses everything: the baby was the child of Laius and Jocasta, given to him to be exposed on the mountain; he pitied it and handed it to the Corinthian, who carried it away. With these words the chain of evidence is complete, for the same man confirms both facts at once, the place of the murder and the birth of the child. The last door of doubt closes, and the name of the murderer stands confessed: Oedipus himself.
8️⃣ The Recognition and Its Result
When the whole truth is out, Oedipus cries out that every prophecy has come true, and asks the light to look on him for the last time. He rushes into the palace, finds Jocasta dead by her own hand, and in his grief blinds himself with the golden pins from her dress. The hunter has found the murderer, himself, and he punishes the criminal with his own hands. The investigation that opened the play closes with the ruin of the king. Yet the discovery is also a kind of triumph: Oedipus, who hunted the truth so fiercely, is the only one who never let the search stop. His honesty as an investigator and his greatness as a sufferer are revealed in the same moment, which is the very heart of tragic recognition.

Conclusion

To conclude, Oedipus finds the killer of Laius through a perfect chain of evidence, the oracle's command, his own proclamation, the accusation of Teiresias, Jocasta's story of the crossroads, the messenger's revelation, the queen's flight and the shepherd's confession. Each step is logical, yet each step is also fatal. Sophocles turns a murder investigation into a tragedy of self-discovery: when the last witness speaks, the king learns that he himself is the criminal he has been hunting all along.

Present the answer as a step-by-step chain — this question tests how well you know the plot order.

Give one line to each witness: Creon (Oracle word), Teiresias, Jocasta, the messenger, the shepherd.

Do not forget the queen sudden flight — it is a silent but powerful step in the chain.

Emphasise the messenger scene: good news that ruins — examiners love this turning point.

Use the term anagnorisis (recognition) for the final revelation by the shepherd.

Close by linking the discovery to the play theme: truth always reveals itself in the end.
