NU 2023 · Reading Passage — “Self-control is at the root of all…”
NU. 2023

Reading Passage — NU 2023

Self-control is at the root of all virtues. Self-control means having the power to control one’s emotions, thoughts and actions. Without it, a person yields his moral freedom. He is carried along by the current of life and becomes the slave of his strongest desire. To be morally free and fully human, a person must resist instinctive impulses. This can be done only through self-control. It distinguishes moral life from merely physical life and forms the basis of individual character. In the Bible, praise is given not to the strong man who captures a city but to the stronger man who rules his own spirit. A truly strong person constantly controls his thoughts, speech and actions through discipline. Through discipline, self-respect and self-control, purity of mind becomes habitual. In this way, character is built in chastity, virtue and temperance.

Questions & Answers

2. How would you define ‘self-control’?

Self-control means the ability to control our emotions, thoughts, desires, speech and actions. It does not mean that a person has no feelings or desires. It means that the person does not allow them to control his behaviour. A self-controlled person can stop himself from doing something wrong even when he strongly wants to do it. He can remain calm in anger, avoid bad habits and choose the right action at the right time. The passage presents self-control as the foundation of all virtues. Without it, a person becomes a slave of his strongest desire and loses his moral freedom. With self-control, he can guide his life according to reason, discipline and moral values. It also helps him control his thoughts, words and conduct. Thus, self-control is not weakness. It is inner strength. A person who can rule his own mind and passions is stronger than a person who can only defeat others.

Self-control অর্থ নিজের আবেগ, চিন্তা, ইচ্ছা, কথা ও কাজ নিয়ন্ত্রণ করার ক্ষমতা। এটি মানুষকে ভুল কাজ থেকে বিরত রাখে এবং প্রকৃত আত্মমর্যাদা ও চরিত্র গঠনে সাহায্য করে।

3. According to the Bible, who deserves praise, and why?

According to the Bible, the person who deserves praise is not the strong man who captures a city. The truly praiseworthy person is the one who can rule his own spirit. Capturing a city shows physical strength, military power and the ability to defeat other people. However, controlling one’s own anger, desires, fear and selfish impulses is much more difficult. A conqueror may defeat many enemies outside himself, but he may still be defeated by his own passions. On the other hand, a self-controlled person can govern his thoughts, speech and actions. He does not become a slave of sudden temptation. For this reason, the Bible calls him stronger than a city conqueror. The passage uses this idea to show that real strength is moral and spiritual strength. External victory may bring fame, but self-mastery builds noble character. Therefore, a person who controls himself deserves greater praise than a person who controls only others.

Bible-এর উক্তি অনুযায়ী, নগর জয়ে করতে পরা মানুষের চেয়ে যে নিজের মন ও প্রবৃত্তিকে জয় করতে পারে, সেই বেশি প্রশংসার যোগ্য। কারণ আত্মনিয়ন্ত্রণ বাহ্যিক শক্তির চেয়ে কঠিন ও মহৎ গুণ।

4. What is the role of self-control in human life?

Self-control plays a very important role in human life. It is described as the root of all virtues because almost every good quality needs control of the self. A person without self-control may know the difference between right and wrong, but he may still follow his sudden desires. Self-control gives him the strength to choose the right course. It protects his moral freedom and prevents him from becoming a slave of anger, greed, fear or passion. It also helps him develop discipline, patience, self-respect and good character. By controlling his thoughts, speech and actions, he can build trustworthy relationships and live peacefully with others. The passage further says that the regular practice of self-control makes purity of mind habitual. It develops virtues such as chastity, temperance and honesty. In this way, self-control guides both personal life and social life. It helps a person become not only successful but also morally strong and worthy of respect.

Self-control মানুষকে শৃঙ্খলা, ধৈর্য, আত্মমর্যাদা ও ভালো চরিত্র গঠনে সাহায্য করে। এটি আবেগ ও কুপ্রবৃত্তিকে নিয়ন্ত্রণ করে মানুষকে নৈতিকভাবে শক্তিশালী করে।

5. Change the words as directed and make sentences with them.

The required changed forms are:

1. Moral → Morality Sentence: Honesty is an important part of morality.

2. Power → Powerful Sentence: Knowledge can make a person powerful.

3. Strong → Strengthen Sentence: Regular exercise can strengthen the body.

4. Spirit → Spiritually Sentence: A person should try to grow spiritually as well as physically.

‘Morality’ is a noun and means the principles of right and wrong behaviour. ‘Powerful’ is an adjective and describes someone or something having great power. ‘Strengthen’ is a verb and means to make someone or something stronger. ‘Spiritually’ is an adverb and describes an action connected with the spirit or inner life. These word forms show how one root or related word can change its grammatical function according to its use in a sentence.

এখানে morality noun, powerful adjective, strengthen verb এবং spiritually adverb হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে। প্রতিটি শব্দ দিয়ে সহজ বাক্য তৈরি করা হয়েছে।

6. Write a summary of the passage.

The passage discusses the importance of self-control in human life. Self-control is defined as the power to control emotions, thoughts, desires, speech and actions. Without this quality, a person loses moral freedom and becomes a slave of his strongest desires. The writer says that self-control is the root of all virtues and the foundation of good character. A person becomes truly strong not by conquering others but by conquering his own passions. The passage supports this idea with a Biblical saying: the man who rules his own spirit is stronger than the man who captures a city. Through constant discipline, a person can control his thoughts, words and conduct. This regular practice develops self-respect, purity of mind, temperance and other virtues. Thus, the passage presents self-control as an essential quality for a moral, disciplined and meaningful life.

Passage-টি self-control-কে সব গুণের ভিত্তি হিসেবে উপস্থাপন করে। শৃঙ্খলার মাধ্যমে নিজের চিন্তা, কথা ও কাজ নিয়ন্ত্রণ করলে মানুষ পবিত্র মন, আত্মমর্যাদা ও উচ্চ চরিত্র অর্জন করে।

NU 2022 · Reading Passage — “Ambition means a strong desire to achieve…”
NU. 2022

Reading Passage — NU 2022

Ambition means a strong desire to achieve something. It is a desire for success, fame, distinction or a higher position in life. Ambition acts as a force because it makes people active and motivates them to work for their goals. Ambition may be good or bad. The ambition to achieve something great and noble is valuable, and nothing great can be done without ambition. A person without ambition can hardly reach his destination. He is like a ship without a rudder. Therefore, ambition is very important in human life. Every person should have an ambition of his own because it gives purpose and direction to life. A person without ambition wastes his natural abilities and achieves nothing for himself or others. However, excessive or selfish ambition is a vice. It may lead a person to destruction. Our ambition should not go beyond our ability and moral limits. Good ambition should be encouraged, and our aims should be high but noble. Only noble ambition can bring peace and prosperity.

Questions & Answers

2. What is ambition?

Ambition means a strong desire to achieve something important in life. It may be the desire for success, fame, knowledge, honour, wealth or a better position. Ambition gives a person a goal and encourages him to work for it. Without ambition, a person may continue to live without any definite purpose. He may waste his time and natural abilities because he has no aim to guide him. The passage compares such a person to a ship without a rudder. Just as a rudder gives direction to a ship, ambition gives direction to human life. However, ambition itself is not always good or bad. Its value depends on its aim and limit. Ambition for a noble and useful purpose is good because it motivates a person to work hard. On the other hand, selfish or unlimited ambition can make a person dishonest and destructive. Therefore, ambition is a powerful force that should be guided by moral values.

Ambition অর্থ জীবনে কোনো নির্দিষ্ট লক্ষ্য অর্জন করার প্রবল ইচ্ছা। এটি মানুষকে দিকনির্দেশনা ও পরিশ্রমের শক্তি দেয়, কিন্তু এর লক্ষ্য মহৎ ও সীমার মধ্যে থাকা দরকার।

3. How many kinds of ambition are presented in the passage?

The passage presents two main kinds of ambition: good or noble ambition and bad or excessive ambition. Good ambition is the desire to achieve something great, useful and morally right. It gives purpose to life and encourages a person to use his abilities properly. For example, a student may ambition to become a good doctor in order to serve sick people. This kind of ambition should be encouraged because it brings progress, peace and prosperity. The second kind is bad, selfish or excessive ambition. It goes beyond a person’s ability and moral limits. Such ambition may make a person greedy, jealous, dishonest or cruel. He may try to succeed by harming others. The passage calls soaring ambition a vice because it can lead to destruction. Therefore, the writer does not ask people to live without ambition. He asks them to choose noble aims and keep their ambition within reasonable limits. The difference lies not in having ambition, but in the purpose and control of ambition.

Passage-তে দুই ধরনের ambition দেখানো হয়েছে: ভালো বা মহৎ ambition এবং খারাপ বা অতিরিক্ত ambition। মহৎ লক্ষ্য ভালো, কিন্তু সীমাহীন ও স্বার্থপর ambition ধ্বংসডাকে।

4. “A man without ambition is like a ship without a rudder.” Explain.

The sentence compares a man without ambition to a ship without a rudder. A rudder is the part of a ship that controls its direction. Without it, the ship cannot move towards a definite destination. It may drift with the wind or waves and may even be destroyed. Human life is similar. Ambition works like the rudder of life because it gives a person a goal and direction. A person without ambition does not know what he wants to achieve. As a result, he may waste his time, energy and natural abilities. He may move from one activity to another without any purpose. The passage says that such a person can hardly reach his destination and achieves nothing for himself or society. On the other hand, a person with a clear ambition can plan his work, remain active and move forward despite difficulties. Therefore, the comparison shows that ambition is necessary for purposeful and successful living.

Rudder যেমন জাহাজকে সহি দিকে চালায়, ambition তেমনই মানুষের জীবনকে লক্ষ্যের দিকে পরিচালিত করে। Ambition ছাড়া মানুষ পথহারানো জাহাজের মতো উদ্দেশ্যহীনভাবে ভেসে বেড়ায়।

5. Why is a soaring or high ambition a vice?

A soaring or excessively high ambition is called a vice because it goes beyond reason, ability and moral limits. The passage does not condemn every high aim. It says that our aims should be high and noble. However, ambition becomes dangerous when a person wants success at any cost or wants something far beyond his capacity. Such a person may become greedy and impatient. He may ignore honesty, human values and the rights of others. If he fails, frustration may destroy his peace of mind. If he tries to succeed by unfair means, he may harm society and finally destroy himself. The passage says that excessive ambition leads to destruction. For example, a person may sacrifice his health, family and moral principles only to gain power or wealth. Therefore, ambition must be controlled by reason and good values. A good ambition inspires effort and progress, but an uncontrolled ambition becomes selfish desire. That is why the writer calls soaring ambition a vice.

অতিরিক্ত উচ্চ বা অসাধারণ ambition ব্যক্তিকে লোভী, অস্থির ও নৈতিকতাবিহীন করে তুলতে পারে। সীমা ও যোগ্যতার বাইরে গেলে ambition সাফল্যের পরিবর্তে ধ্বংস ডেকে আনে।

6. How does ambition play an important role in human life?

Ambition plays an important role by giving purpose, direction and energy to human life. A person with ambition knows what he wants to achieve. This clear goal helps him plan his work and use his time properly. Ambition also motivates him to work hard when he faces laziness or difficulty. Without ambition, a person may waste his natural abilities and achieve nothing for himself or others. The passage says that ambition can make a person active and help him reach success or distinction. Noble ambition is especially valuable because it encourages useful achievement. For example, the ambition to become a teacher, doctor, scientist or honest public servant can benefit both the individual and society. Ambition also helps people discover their hidden abilities. However, it must remain within moral limits. Selfish and unlimited ambition can cause harm, while noble ambition brings peace and prosperity. Therefore, every person should have a meaningful ambition and work sincerely to achieve it.

Ambition জীবনে লক্ষ্য, দিকনির্দেশনা ও পরিশ্রমের শক্তি যোগায়। মহৎ ambition মানুষকে সফল করে এবং সমাজেরও উপকার করে, তবে তা নৈতিক সীমার মধ্যে রাখা প্রয়োজন।

NU 2021 · Reading Passage — “Life without hope is meaningless. Hope is…”
NU. 2021

Reading Passage — NU 2021

Life without hope is meaningless. Hope is one of the chief supports of life. Apart from bread, we live upon hope. It makes life easy and comfortable. It sustains life as bread sustains the body. Hope keeps the ship of life afloat on the sea of the world. It cheers the mind and keeps us in good spirits during distress. If hope is taken away, the ship of life may be wrecked on the rock of despair. Hope is therefore one of the greatest gifts given to human beings. There is no end to hope. When one hope disappears, another quickly takes its place. Sometimes hope deceives people, and for this reason it is called a traitor. Yet people love and cherish it because it never completely deserts them. When sorrows and adversities come, hope gives courage and patience. It tells people that difficult days will pass and happiness will follow. Thus, hope saves a person when everything else fails. It teaches patience, endurance and firmness of purpose. However, hope should not be too high because impossible hopes are seldom realized.

Questions & Answers

2. How does hope help us to face the adversities in life?

Hope helps us face adversity by giving courage, patience and endurance. When a person suffers from failure, poverty, illness or any other difficulty, he may feel weak and hopeless. Hope reminds him that the present difficulty will not last forever. It gives him the strength to continue his effort instead of giving up. The passage says that hope cheers the mind and keeps people in good spirits during distress. It also tells them that happiness may follow sorrow. In this way, hope acts like an inner support. The writer compares life to a ship and hope to the force that keeps the ship afloat. Without hope, a person may be destroyed by despair, just as a ship is wrecked on rocks. Hope also teaches patience and firmness of purpose. It helps a person wait, struggle and endure until a better situation comes. However, the passage also warns that hope should not be based on something completely impossible. Real hope gives strength, but unrealistic hope may cause disappointment.

Hope বিপদের সময় মানুষকে সাহস, ধৈর্য ও সহনশীলতা দেয়। এটি মানুষকে হাল না ছেড়ে চলার শক্তি দেয় এবং মনে বিশ্বাস রাখে যে খারাপ সময় শেষ হবে।

3. What is the writer’s attitude towards hope?

The writer’s attitude towards hope is mainly positive, appreciative and sympathetic. He presents hope as one of the chief supports of human life. The passage uses strong comparisons to show its value. Hope is compared with bread because it sustains life, and life is compared with a ship that hope keeps afloat. The writer also calls hope one of the greatest gifts because it gives courage during sorrow and adversity. He believes that hope can save a person when everything else fails. However, his attitude is not completely blind or one-sided. He admits that hope sometimes deceives people and may be called a traitor. He also warns readers not to hope for things that are impossible to achieve. This means that the writer supports realistic hope, not empty fantasy. He wants people to keep hope because it gives strength, patience and endurance. At the same time, he asks them to keep their hopes within practical limits. Therefore, his attitude may be described as positive but balanced and cautious.

লেখক hope-এর প্রতি ইতিবাচক, কিন্তু তাঁর দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি সন্তুলিত। তিনি hope-কে জীবনের শক্তি মনে করলেও অসম্ভব বস্তুর অবাস্তব আশা থেকে সতর্ক করেছেন।

4. What is the significance of hope in life?

Hope is significant because it gives meaning, strength and direction to human life. The passage says that life without hope is meaningless. Human beings need food for the body, but they also need hope for the mind and spirit. Hope makes burdens easier to bear and helps people remain cheerful during distress. It keeps the “ship of life” afloat when problems become severe. Without hope, people may fall into despair and lose the courage to continue. Hope also creates patience and endurance. It teaches people to wait for better days and work steadily towards them. Another important feature of hope is that it renews itself. When one hope ends, another can take its place. This continuous renewal helps people survive failure and loss. The passage further says that hope gives courage when sorrows and adversities arrive. It reminds people that happiness may follow unhappiness. For these reasons, hope is presented as one of life’s greatest supports. Still, it should be realistic so that it does not become harmful disappointment.

Hope জীবনে অর্থ, মানসিক শক্তি, ধৈর্য ও চলার সাহস যোগায়। এক আশা শেষ হলে আরেকটি আসে, ফলে মানুষ বিপদ ও ব্যর্থতা সহ্য করতে পারে।

5. What are the ends of life without hope?

According to the passage, life without hope becomes meaningless and full of despair. The writer compares life to a ship and hope to the force that keeps it afloat. If hope is removed, the ship of life may be wrecked on the rock of despair. This means that a hopeless person may lose the courage to live, struggle and face problems. He may feel that there is no future and no possibility of improvement. Such a person cannot tolerate sorrow or adversity properly because he has no inner strength. Hope normally gives patience, endurance and firmness of purpose. Without these qualities, failure may completely destroy him. He may give up his work, relationships and responsibilities. The passage also suggests that human beings live not only with bread but also with hope. Therefore, the absence of hope is like spiritual starvation. It makes life dark, weak and purposeless. The final end may be frustration, mental suffering and defeat. Thus, hope is necessary for survival, progress and a meaningful life.

Hope ছাড়া জীবন অর্থহীন, নৈরাশ্যময় ও উদ্দেশ্যহীন হয়ে পড়ে। মানুষ ধৈর্য ও সাহস হারায় এবং বিপদের সামনা না করে পরাজয়ের দিকে এগিয়ে যায়।

6. What type of writing is the text? Evaluate.

The text is a reflective and motivational piece of non-fiction prose. It is not a story because it has no plot, characters or dialogue. Its main purpose is to explain the value of hope and encourage readers to remain hopeful during adversity. The writer uses simple language, repetition and strong metaphors. Hope is compared with bread, and life is compared with a ship sailing on the sea. These comparisons make an abstract idea easy to understand. The passage also has a clear central idea: hope supports life, gives courage and teaches patience. Its tone is positive, serious and encouraging. These are the main strengths of the writing. However, the passage is not completely balanced. It sometimes presents hope in an exaggerated way by saying that nothing can benefit life more than hope. It also admits that hope can deceive people, but it does not discuss this point in detail. Some sentences are also repeated or grammatically imperfect. Despite these weaknesses, the text succeeds in motivating ordinary readers and explaining the importance of realistic hope.

Text-টি চিন্তাধর্মী ও উৎসাহমূলক non-fiction prose। সহজ ভাষা, পুনরাবৃত্তি এবং рূপক ব্যবহার করে hope-এর গুরুত্ব বোঝানো হয়েছে। তবে কিছু বক্তব্য অতিশয়োক্তিপূর্ণ এবং লেখায় পুনরাবৃত্তি আছে।

NU 2020 · Reading Passage — “I was there in the autumn. I…”
NU. 2020

Reading Passage — NU 2020

I was there in the autumn. I wanted quiet and isolation so that I could do some difficult writing. I also wanted the mountain air to remove the effects of malaria after a long stay in the subtropics. I was homesick for the bright colours of maples in October, corn shocks, pumpkins, black-walnut trees and the rising hills. I found all these things while living in a cabin that belonged to an orphanage farm. When I took the cabin, I asked the orphanage to send a boy or man to chop wood for the fireplace. During the first few warm days, I found enough wood near the cabin and forgot the order. One late afternoon, I looked up from my typewriter and was startled. A small boy stood at the door. My pointer dog, my companion, had not barked to warn me. The boy was probably twelve years old, but he was undersized. He wore overalls and a torn shirt and was barefoot. He said that he had come from the orphanage to chop wood. When I expressed surprise at his size, he confidently said that size did not matter in chopping wood. Although I doubted his ability, I gave him the axe and asked him to try.

Questions & Answers

2. What information do you get about the boy?

The passage gives both physical and personal information about the boy. He is probably about twelve years old, but he is undersized and physically weak-looking. He comes from an orphanage and has been sent to chop wood for the narrator’s fireplace. He wears overalls and a torn shirt, and he is barefoot. These details suggest that he is poor and does not possess comfortable clothes or shoes. His appearance makes the narrator doubt whether he can do heavy work. However, the boy speaks with confidence. When the narrator questions his small size, he says that size does not matter in chopping wood. He also says that some bigger boys do not chop wood well. This reply shows that the boy judges ability by work, not by body size. Although the passage gives only a short description, his poverty, confidence and willingness to work are clear. He does not complain about his condition or ask for sympathy. Instead, he presents himself as a worker who is ready to prove his ability.

ছেলেটি প্রায় বারো বছরের, খাটো, দরিদ্র ও ছেঁড়া পোশাক ও খালি পায়ের। তবে সে অত্যন্ত আত্মবিশ্বাসী এবং শারীরিক আকারের চেয়ে কাজের দক্ষতাকে বেশি গুরুত্ব দেয়।

3. Who is the boy and what is your impression about him?

The boy is an orphanage boy who has come to chop wood for the narrator. The narrator had asked the orphanage to send a boy or man for this work, and the small boy presents himself as the worker. At first, his appearance creates doubt because he is only about twelve years old, undersized, poorly dressed and barefoot. The narrator even imagines that he may bring damaged and useless branches for the fire. However, the boy’s words create a different impression. He is not ashamed of his poverty or small body. He confidently says that size does not matter in chopping wood. This shows courage, self-respect and belief in his own ability. He is also willing to work instead of depending on others’ pity. His confidence is more impressive than his physical appearance. From this short extract, he appears to be poor but hardworking, determined and self-reliant. The narrator’s surprise also suggests that the boy may be more capable than he looks. Therefore, the boy leaves an impression of inner strength and practical confidence.

সে orphanage-এর একটি দরিদ্র ছেলে যে কাঠ কাটতে এসেছে। তার বাহ্যিক অবস্থা দুর্বল মনে হলেও আত্মবিশ্বাস, পরিশ্রমী মনোভাব ও আত্মনির্ভরশীলতা তাকে ভেতর থেকে শক্তিশালী করেছে।

4. What attitude of the speaker towards the boy is presented here?

The speaker’s attitude towards the boy is initially doubtful, surprised and somewhat unkind. When he sees the small, undersized and barefoot boy at the door, he is startled. His dog has not barked, and the boy does not look strong enough to chop wood. The speaker remembers that he had asked for a boy or man, but he expected someone older and stronger. He even imagines damaged and useless branches for his fire. This shows that he judges the boy by physical appearance before knowing his ability. He also admits that he was “a little blunt” while speaking to him. His question about the boy’s small size may hurt the child’s feelings. However, the speaker is not completely unfair or cruel. Although he doubts the boy, he gives him the axe and allows him to try. This shows a little openness and patience. Therefore, his attitude changes from disbelief to a limited willingness to test the boy. The passage presents this contrast to show that outward weakness does not always prove inner inability.

Speaker প্রথমে ছেলেটিকে নিয়ে সন্দেহ প্রকাশ করেন এবং তার শারীরিক দুর্বলতার কথা বলে কিছুটা রূক্ষ আচরণ করেন। তবে শেষে তাকে পরীক্ষা করার সুযোগ দেওয়ায় তাঁর মনোভাবে সামান্য ন্যায্যতা দেখা যায়।

5. What type of writing is this text, fiction or non-fiction? Evaluate.

The extract is best treated as a piece of narrative fiction. It tells a short incident through a first-person narrator, a definite setting, a child character, dialogue and a conflict between appearance and ability. The autumn cabin, the quiet writer, the pointer dog and the unexpected arrival of the small boy create a literary scene. The dialogue is also carefully arranged to reveal the character of the boy and the attitude of the narrator. These features are common in fiction. However, the first-person style makes the incident seem realistic, and it could also be read as a personal memoir. The passage does not clearly prove that the event is imaginary. For an examination answer, it is reasonable to call it fictional narrative because the characters, setting and conversation appear to be artistically presented. Its purpose is not only to give information but also to create interest and reveal a human quality. The main strength of the writing is characterization. In a short space, the small boy becomes memorable through his confidence and simple speech.

Extract-টিকে narrative fiction হিসেবে ধরা যায় কারণ এতে setting, character, dialogue, conflict ও character revelation আছে। প্রথম পুরুষের বর্ণনা একে বাস্তব মনে করালেও দৃশ্য ও সংলাপ সাহিত্যিকভাবে সাজানো।

6. What natural elements are available in the autumn?

The passage presents several natural elements and autumn images. The narrator stays in a cabin in the mountains, where he enjoys quiet and fresh mountain air. He is especially homesick for the flaming colours of maple trees in October. This suggests the bright red, orange and yellow leaves that are common in autumn. He also remembers corn shocks, pumpkins and black-walnut trees. These are rural autumn images connected with harvest and seasonal change. The “lift of hills” adds a picture of the natural landscape. The fireplace and the need for chopped wood show that the weather is becoming colder. The late afternoon setting also creates a quiet autumn atmosphere. Although the passage does not describe rain, snow or wind, its natural elements include mountains, hills, trees, autumn colours, crops, cold weather and wood for warmth. Together, these details create a peaceful rural scene. They also show why the narrator chooses the cabin. Nature gives him both physical relief and emotional comfort during his writing.

Autumn-এর প্রাকৃতিক উপাদানগুলো হলো পাহাড়ের ঢাল, শৈত্যপ্রধান বাতাস, October-তে রঙিন maple গাছ, corn shocks, pumpkins, black-walnut trees এবং fireplace-এর জন্য কাঠ। এগুলো শান্ত গ্রাম্য autumn-এর ছবি তৈরি করে।

NU 2019 · Reading Passage — “People do not always read books only…”
NU. 2019

Reading Passage — NU 2019

People do not always read books only for pleasure. Some people read a book because they want to say that they have read it. They want to remain fashionable or “in the swim”. When they read for this purpose, they usually run through the book quickly. There are also people who read because they think a book will do them good. They make reading a duty and read as a kind of penance. They take books as if they were medicine. Some students read books to please their teachers. If a teacher says that a particular book is good and that enjoying it is a sign of good taste, many boys and girls try to read it. These are some reasons for reading. According to L. A. G. Strong, people should read books only for pleasure. However, people actually read for many strange reasons. In private life, many read for pleasure. When they study a special subject or prepare for an examination, they have to read many books even against their will.

Questions & Answers

2. Why should people read books according to the passage?

The passage does not give only one reason why people read books. It shows that different people read for different purposes. Some people read for pleasure, especially in their private time. This is the reason supported by L. A. G. Strong, who says that people should read books only to enjoy them. Many people also read because they think a book will benefit them. They may want knowledge, self-improvement or moral guidance. Students often read to please their teachers or to follow the teacher’s opinion about good literature. Some students also read because their studies or examinations require them to do so. In such cases, they may read against their will. Another group reads fashionable books only so that they can say they have read them and remain socially fashionable. Therefore, the passage presents reading as an activity with many motives. It does not say that all reading is pleasurable. Instead, it shows the difference between reading for enjoyment, benefit, academic duty, social approval and examination.

Passage অনুযায়ী মানুষ বিভিন্ন কারণে বই পড়ে—আনন্দ, জ্ঞান বা উপকার, শিক্ষককে খুশি করা, পরীক্ষা এবং সামাজিকভাবে fashionable দেখানো। সব reading একই উদ্দেশ্যে হয় না।

3. How can people get good from a book?

The passage says that some people read books because they believe the books will do them good. These readers treat books like medicine. This comparison suggests that they expect knowledge, moral improvement, guidance or some other benefit from reading. However, simply holding or opening a book does not automatically bring good. To receive real benefit, a reader should choose a useful book and read it with a serious purpose. He should try to understand the ideas instead of only running through the pages. He may also apply good lessons to his life. The passage contrasts this purpose with reading only to please others or to appear fashionable. A book can improve knowledge, refine taste, develop thinking and teach valuable human experiences. Educational books can help students prepare for examinations and professional life. Literary books can also deepen sympathy and understanding of society. Therefore, people can get good from books when they read thoughtfully and use the knowledge or lessons in a proper way. Reading should not be a lifeless duty only; it should produce real understanding and positive change.

উপকারী বই মনোনীত করে মনোযোগ সহকারে পড়লে জ্ঞান, চিন্তাশক্তি, রুচি ও চরিত্র উন্নত হয়। শুধু দায়িত্ব হিসেবে নয়, বুঝে ও জীবনে প্রয়োগ করে পড়াই প্রকৃত উপকার দেয়।

4. Why do some people read books as if they were medicine?

Some people read books as if books were medicine because they believe that reading will improve them or cure some weakness. Medicine is often taken not for pleasure but because it is useful or necessary. Similarly, these readers do not read because they enjoy the book. They read from a sense of duty, thinking that the book will give them knowledge, culture, moral improvement or social respect. The passage says that they make reading a duty and read it as penance. This means that reading may feel unpleasant or difficult to them, just as bitter medicine may feel unpleasant. They may believe that suffering through a respected book will make them better or more cultured. The comparison also suggests that they treat books as tools for improvement rather than sources of pleasure. However, the writer presents this habit with a little humour and criticism. Reading only as a painful duty may not create real love for books. A book can be beneficial, but the reader should also try to understand and enjoy it instead of treating every book like bitter medicine.

কিছু মানুষ বইকে ঔষধের মতো নেয় কারণ তারা মনে করে বই পড়লে তাদের জ্ঞান, রুচি বা চরিত্রের উন্নতি হবে। কিন্তু এভাবে পড়া প্রায়ই আনন্দের বদলে কষ্টকর দায়িত্বে পরিণত হয়।

5. Who make reading a duty?

The people who make reading a duty are those who read books because they think the books will do them good. They do not necessarily enjoy the books. Instead, they believe that reading certain books is necessary for their improvement. The passage says that they read as penance and take books as if the books were medicine. This means that they approach reading with seriousness but without pleasure. They may think that a respected or difficult book will make them knowledgeable, cultured or morally better. Students may also turn reading into a duty when they read to please their teachers or prepare for examinations. In both cases, reading is performed because it is required or expected, not because it is enjoyable. The passage does not say that serious reading is useless. It only shows that people have different motives. Reading for improvement can be valuable, but if it becomes only a painful duty, the reader may lose curiosity and genuine interest in books.

যারা বইকে নিজের উন্নতির ঔষধ মনে করেন, তারা reading-কে দায়িত্ব হিসেবে নেন। এ ছাড়া শিক্ষককে খুশি করা বা পরীক্ষার জন্যও অনেক ছাত্র reading-কে বাধ্যতামূলক কাজ ভাবে।

6. What is the sign of good taste to enjoy a book to school boys and girls?

According to the passage, school boys and girls think that it is a sign of good taste to enjoy a particular book when their teacher has declared it to be good. The teacher’s opinion strongly influences them. If the teacher praises a book, the students try to obtain and read it. They also try to convince themselves that they enjoy it because they want to please the teacher and appear cultured. In reality, their taste may not be independent. They follow the teacher’s judgment rather than discovering the value of the book through their own understanding. The passage presents this behaviour with gentle humour. It suggests that students may call a book enjoyable only because an authority has approved it. However, the passage also shows the importance of teachers in forming young readers’ habits. A good teacher can introduce students to valuable literature. Still, true good taste should develop through sincere reading, understanding and personal response, not only through the desire to please a teacher or follow a fashionable opinion.

ছাত্রছাত্রীরা শিক্ষক যে বইটিকে ভালো বলেন, সেটি উপভোগ করতে পারলে তাকে good taste-এর লক্ষণ মনে করে। তবে প্রকৃত রুচি শিক্ষকের কথা অনুকরণ করে নয়, নিজে বুঝে ও উপভোগ করে গড়ে ওঠে।

NU 2018 · Reading Passage — “Nuclear energy is produced through nuclear processes…”
NU. 2018

Reading Passage — NU 2018

Nuclear energy is produced through nuclear processes and is used to generate electricity and heat. The energy comes from the nucleus, the central part of an atom. Nuclear fission works by splitting an unstable uranium nucleus and releasing a large amount of energy. This process is used in nuclear reactors. The heat produced by fission boils water and creates steam. The steam turns turbines, and the turbines produce electricity. Nuclear fusion is another process that can release great energy, but it requires very high heat. Nuclear energy has several advantages. It can produce a large amount of power and reduce fear of shortage. Nuclear plants may be more efficient than coal or oil plants and are not easily affected by market fluctuations. They do not directly emit greenhouse gases during electricity production. They can also create jobs. Nuclear technology is used in medicine, including cancer therapy, CAT scans and MRI machines. However, nuclear energy has serious dangers. Burnt nuclear material remains radioactive for many years. A meltdown can be extremely dangerous, and high-level radioactive waste must be disposed of carefully. Otherwise, it may remain harmful for thousands of years.

Questions & Answers

2. How is nuclear energy generated?

Nuclear energy is generated from the nucleus at the centre of an atom. The passage mainly describes the process of nuclear fission. In fission, the nucleus of an unstable atom, especially uranium, is split. This splitting releases a very large amount of heat energy. In a nuclear reactor, this heat is controlled and used to boil water. The boiling water produces steam under pressure. The steam then turns the blades of a turbine. The moving turbine drives a generator, and the generator produces electricity. In this way, nuclear heat is changed into mechanical energy and then into electrical energy. The passage also mentions nuclear fusion as another source of nuclear energy. Fusion joins light atomic nuclei and can release great energy, but it needs extremely high temperature. Commercial nuclear power stations mainly use fission because it can be controlled in a reactor. Therefore, the basic process is: split uranium, produce heat, boil water, create steam, turn turbines and generate electricity.

Nuclear fission-এ uranium nucleus ভেঙে প্রচুর তাপ শক্তি তৈরি হয়। এই তাপ পানিকে steam-এ পরিণত করে, steam turbine ঘোরায় এবং generator বিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদন করে।

3. What are the dangers of using nuclear energy?

Nuclear energy has several serious dangers. The first danger is radioactive waste. After nuclear fuel is used, the burnt material remains radioactive for many years. The passage says that some waste may remain harmful for thousands of years. If it is not stored and disposed of carefully, it can harm human beings and the environment. The second danger is a nuclear meltdown. A meltdown may occur if a reactor becomes uncontrollable or its cooling system fails. It can release dangerous radiation over a wide area. Such an accident may cause death, illness, evacuation and long-term pollution. Radioactive contamination can affect land, water, plants, animals and future generations. Nuclear plants also require extremely careful management because a small technical or human error may create a large disaster. The passage further suggests that radioactive material must be handled with proper safety measures. Although nuclear energy can produce electricity without directly releasing greenhouse gases, its accident risk and waste problem cannot be ignored. Therefore, nuclear power must be used with strong regulation, advanced technology and constant caution.

প্রধান ঝুঁকি হলো radioactive waste, nuclear meltdown এবং radiation contamination। এসব হাজার হাজার বছর পরিবেশ ও মানুষের জন্য ক্ষতিকর থাকতে পারে, তাই অত্যন্ত সতর্কতা প্রয়োজন।

4. How is nuclear technology used in medical treatment?

The passage says that nuclear technology has important uses in medical treatment and diagnosis. One major use is cancer therapy. Controlled radiation can be directed at cancer cells to damage or destroy them. In this way, nuclear medicine can help treat some diseases that are difficult to cure by ordinary methods. The passage also mentions CAT scans and MRI machines as medical processes connected with nuclear technology. Modern scanning technology allows doctors to see the inside of the human body without major surgery. These images help them detect injuries, tumours and other internal problems more accurately. As a result, patients can receive faster and better treatment. Nuclear technology is therefore not limited to electricity production. It can also protect health and save lives when it is used carefully. However, medical radiation must be controlled by trained professionals because unnecessary exposure can be harmful. The passage presents this use as one of the greatest advantages of nuclear science. Thus, the same scientific knowledge that creates danger in power production can bring great benefit in hospitals.

Nuclear technology cancer therapy-tে controlled radiation ব্যবহার করে এবং CAT scan, MRI-এর মতো imaging প্রযুক্তির মাধ্যমে শরীরের ভেতরের সমস্যা শনাক্ত করতে সাহায্য করে। এতে রোগ নির্ণয় ও চিকিৎসা সহজ হয়।

5. What safety measures need to be taken at a nuclear power plant?

A nuclear power plant needs strict safety measures at every stage. First, the reactor must be designed with strong containment systems so that radiation cannot escape during an accident. Second, the cooling system must work properly because overheating can cause a meltdown. The plant should also have backup cooling and power systems. Third, only trained and qualified workers should operate and maintain the reactor. They must follow safety rules and avoid careless mistakes. Fourth, radiation levels should be continuously monitored inside and outside the plant. Emergency alarms, evacuation plans and medical support should be ready at all times. Fifth, nuclear waste must be shielded, transported and stored with great care. Long-term disposal should be planned scientifically because waste may remain dangerous for thousands of years. Regular inspection by an independent authority is also necessary. The plant should be located after studying earthquakes, floods and other natural risks. Finally, the surrounding community should receive clear information and emergency training. These measures cannot remove every risk, but they can greatly reduce the chance of disaster.

Nuclear plant-এ শক্তিশালী containment, নির্ভুল cooling system, trained worker, continuous radiation monitoring, emergency plan এবং বৈজ্ঞানিক waste disposal প্রয়োজন। নিয়মিত inspection ও community preparedness-ও অপরিহার্য।

6. What is your opinion regarding the use of nuclear power plants in Bangladesh? Why do you think so?

In my opinion, Bangladesh may use nuclear power plants, but only with strict safety, transparency and long-term planning. The country’s demand for electricity is increasing because of population growth, industrialization and modern life. Nuclear power can produce a large amount of electricity from a relatively small quantity of fuel. It can also reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and help limit direct greenhouse gas emissions. These advantages make it useful for Bangladesh. However, the decision should not be based only on the need for electricity. Bangladesh is densely populated, and a serious accident could affect many people. The country also needs skilled engineers, strong regulation, reliable equipment and an effective emergency system. Radioactive waste is another major problem because it remains dangerous for a very long time. Corruption, poor maintenance or careless operation must not be allowed in this sector. Therefore, nuclear power may be accepted as one part of the national energy mix, but not as an unchecked solution. Safety, waste management and trained human resources must come before speed and political pride.

বাংলাদেশে nuclear power ব্যবহার করা যায় কারণ এতে প্রচুর বিদ্যুৎ ও fossil fuel-এর ওপর নির্ভরতা কমতে পারে। তবে ঘনবসতি, radioactive waste, দক্ষ জনবল ও accident risk-এর কারণে কঠোর নিরাপত্তা ও স্বচ্ছ পর্যবেক্ষণ অপরিহার্য।

NU 2017 · Reading Passage — “Go into a coffee bar, sit down,…”
NU. 2017

Reading Passage — NU 2017

Go into a coffee bar, sit down, relax and try to talk to someone. It may look to other people as if you are wasting time. It may even feel that way to you. However, if you do this in a foreign country, you may learn the language better than through formal study with a teacher and a textbook. A properly used social situation can be more effective than a classroom. It provides native speakers who ask questions, give instructions, encourage participation and use gestures to make their meaning clear. So, a learner should plunge into conversation and talk back. There may be biological reasons why language-learning ability decreases with age. The brain may do its best language learning in infancy and then change its resources at puberty. Psychological factors also play a big part. As people grow older, they become more self-conscious, inhibited and dependent on other people’s judgments. They fear making mistakes because language is closely connected with personality and identity. When middle-aged people learn a language, they often treat it as a difficult and unnatural fight. They turn to grammar books and compact discs expecting a struggle. They want to “master” the language before it defeats them. With this attitude, the language often does defeat them. The best learner is usually relaxed in conversation and self-confident.

Questions & Answers

2. What will make the native speakers’ intentions clear?

According to the passage, native speakers make their intentions clear by using gestures freely. In real conversation, they do not depend only on words. They ask questions, give instructions and encourage the learner to take part. Their hand movements, facial expressions and body language also help explain what they mean. This is compared with the way parents communicate with an infant. Parents often use gestures, tone and repeated actions before the child understands all words. In the same way, native speakers can make a foreign learner understand their intention even when the learner does not know the language perfectly. A classroom may explain grammar clearly, but a social situation gives immediate and natural communication. The learner can see the meaning in a real context. For example, a gesture towards a chair may explain an invitation to sit. A facial expression may show approval, warning or surprise. Therefore, gestures act as a bridge between the native speaker and the foreign learner. They reduce confusion and make conversation easier. This is why the passage says that a social situation can sometimes teach better than a classroom.

Native speaker-দের হাতের ভাষা, মুখভঙ্গি ও শরীরী ভাষা তাঁদের উদ্দেশ্য স্পষ্ট করে। শুধু word নয়, gesture-এর মাধ্যমে foreign learner সহজে ব্যবহারিক অর্থ বুঝতে পারে।

3. How can you learn a new language?

The passage suggests that a new language can be learned most naturally by using it in real social situations. A learner should enter places where native speakers talk, such as a coffee bar, and try to speak with them. He should not wait until he knows every grammar rule or vocabulary item. Instead, he should listen, answer questions, follow instructions and take part in conversation. The writer says that the learner should “plunge in” and talk back. Mistakes should not create fear because communication is more important than perfect grammar at the beginning. Native speakers can help by asking questions and using gestures. This kind of learning gives practice in pronunciation, listening, vocabulary and quick response. Formal study with a teacher and textbook can also be useful, but it should not be the only method. A learner needs both knowledge and practice. He should remain relaxed, self-confident and willing to communicate. Over time, regular conversation can make the language natural. Therefore, the passage recommends active speaking in real life rather than learning a language only as a difficult academic subject.

নতুন ভাষা শেখার ভালো উপায় হলো native speaker-দের সঙ্গে বাস্তব কথোপকথনে অংশ নেওয়া। Grammar book-এর সঙ্গে listening ও speaking practice দরকার। ভুল করার ভয় না পেয়ে relaxed ও self-confident থাকা উচিত।

4. Which factors play a big part in learning a language?

The passage says that both biological and psychological factors play an important part in language learning. Biologically, the brain may be most suitable for learning language in infancy. As a person grows older, especially after puberty, this natural ability may decrease. This can make language learning more difficult for adults than for children. However, the passage gives special importance to psychological factors. As people become older, they become more self-conscious and afraid of other people’s opinions. They feel inhibited and do not want to make mistakes in public. This fear prevents them from speaking freely. Language is also connected with personality and identity, so mistakes may feel like personal failure. These mental barriers can damage learning more than lack of intelligence. A relaxed and self-confident learner usually performs better. He is willing to speak, listen and learn from mistakes. Therefore, successful language learning depends not only on age and brain development but also on confidence, attitude and freedom from fear. A learner should treat communication as practice rather than a battle to be won immediately.

Language learning-এ biological factor যেমন বয়সের সঙ্গে প্রভাব ফেলে, psychological factor যেমন ভয়, self-consciousness ও inhibitionও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রাখে। আত্মবিশ্বাসী ও relaxed learner ভালো শেখে।

5. How can a person be a good learner?

A person can be a good language learner by remaining relaxed, self-confident and active in conversation. The passage says that, all other things being equal, the best learner is the person who is most relaxed and self-confident. Such a learner does not become silent because he fears mistakes. He listens to native speakers, asks questions and tries to answer. He understands that mistakes are a normal part of learning. He also uses the social environment instead of depending only on grammar books and compact discs. A good learner should not treat language learning as an unnatural fight or a battle against the language. This negative attitude can create pressure and failure. Instead, he should communicate naturally and learn from each conversation. Regular practice will gradually improve pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and fluency. Confidence is especially important because language is connected with personality. If a learner feels ashamed after every error, he may stop speaking. Therefore, courage, patience, interest and a positive attitude are necessary. A good learner uses both formal study and real communication to develop the language.

ভালো language learner হতে relaxed, self-confident ও active হতে হয়। ভুলকে failure না ভেবে practice মনে করতে হবে। Real conversation, regular practice ও positive attitude ভাষা শেখাকে সহজ করে।

6. Why do people turn to grammar books and compact discs expecting a fight?

People turn to grammar books and compact discs expecting a fight because they wrongly believe that learning a new language is extremely difficult and unnatural. The passage says that many middle-aged learners begin with the feeling that they must struggle against the language. They use words such as “struggle”, “master” and “defeat”. This shows a battle-like attitude. They think they must first control grammar and memorize vocabulary before they can speak. They may also feel embarrassed about making mistakes in front of others. As people grow older, they become more self-conscious and dependent on other people’s judgments. For this reason, they prefer private study materials to real conversation. Grammar books and compact discs seem safer because there is no immediate social pressure. However, this approach can make learning stiff and difficult. A language is not learned only by knowing rules; it must be used. When learners expect a fight, they become tense and lose confidence. The passage warns that with this attitude, the language will probably defeat them. A better approach is relaxed communication and regular practice.

মানুষ grammar book ও compact disc-কে যুদ্ধের অস্ত্র মনে করে কারণ তারা ভাষা শেখাকে অত্যন্ত কঠিন ও অস্বাভাবিক মনে করে। ভুল করার ভয় ও social pressure-এর কারণে তারা real conversation এড়িয়ে চলে।

NU 2016 · Reading Passage — “Men usually want to have their own…”
NU. 2016

Reading Passage — NU 2016

Men usually want to have their own way. They want to think and act as they like. However, no one can have his own way all the time. A person cannot live in society without considering the interests of others as well as his own interests. Society means a group of people who live under the same laws and follow the same way of life. People may make their own decisions, but those decisions should not be unjust or harmful to others. A careless decision can easily injure another person. For example, a motorist may drive at full speed to reach a friend’s house quickly. If he strikes another car, passengers may be injured or killed. Many road accidents happen because of the thoughtlessness of selfish drivers. Governments, police and law courts exist to prevent or punish such criminal acts. In addition, all people should observe certain rules of conduct. Everyone should behave with consideration for others and should not steal, cheat or destroy their property. Such behaviour has no place in a civilized society. People in a free society enjoy many privileges, but they must respect the rights of others. The happiness of a community depends on the behaviour of its individual members. Every good citizen has a responsibility to give as well as to receive.

Questions & Answers

2. What do you mean by ‘society’?

Society means a group of people who live together, follow the same general way of life and are governed by common laws and rules. It is not merely a crowd of people in one place. The members of a society share roads, markets, schools, public services, culture and social responsibilities. They also depend on one another in many ways. The passage says that people may want to think and act freely, but they cannot ignore the interests of others. This is because one person’s action can affect many other people. For example, a selfish driver may cause injury or death to strangers. Society therefore needs laws, police, courts and accepted rules of conduct. At the same time, formal institutions are not enough. Every member must behave with consideration and respect the rights of others. A good society gives people freedom and privileges, but it also expects duties from them. People must not steal, cheat, destroy property or act thoughtlessly. Thus, society is based on cooperation, responsibility, law and mutual respect.

Society অর্থ একই আইন, নিয়ম ও জীবনধারার মধ্যে বাস করা মানুষের সমন্বয়ে গঠিত সমাজ। এখানে ব্যক্তিস্বাধীনতা থাকলেও অন্যের অধিকার ও স্বার্থ সম্মান করা প্রত্যেকের দায়িত্ব।

3. What kind of decisions might bring danger or suffering to others?

Decisions based on selfishness, carelessness and disregard for other people may bring danger or suffering to others. The passage gives the example of a motorist who drives at full speed because he wants to reach a friend’s house quickly. His decision may appear useful only to himself, but it can cause a serious accident. Another vehicle may be hit, passengers may be injured and someone may even be killed. The passage also mentions stealing, cheating and destroying other people’s property. These are deliberate decisions that cause loss, fear and suffering. A person may think that he is exercising his freedom, but freedom does not give him the right to harm others. Unjust decisions can also damage trust and peace in a community. For example, breaking traffic rules, polluting public places, harassing people or damaging public property creates suffering beyond the individual. Therefore, every decision should consider its possible effect on others. A responsible person asks whether his action is fair, safe and lawful before doing it. In a civilized society, personal freedom must be guided by social responsibility.

স্বার্থপর, অযত্নশীল ও অন্যের ক্ষতি করে এমন সিদ্ধান্ত বিপদ ও দুঃখ তৈরি করে। দ্রুত গাড়ি চালানো, চুরি, প্রতারণা ও সম্পত্তি ধ্বংস এর উদাহরণ। ব্যক্তিস্বাধীনতা অন্যের ক্ষতির অধিকার দেয় না।

4. How are people in society protected from the criminal acts of others?

People in society are protected from criminal acts mainly by governments, the police and the law courts. The government makes laws that define acceptable and unacceptable behaviour. These laws protect life, property, freedom and public order. The police help prevent crimes, investigate offences and bring suspected offenders to justice. The law courts hear evidence, decide guilt or innocence and punish criminals according to law. In this way, the state tries to stop people from harming others. However, the passage says that these institutions are not sufficient by themselves. Society also needs moral rules and responsible citizens. Every person should behave with consideration for others and should not steal, cheat or destroy property. If people obey laws only because police are watching, society cannot remain truly safe. Citizens must develop self-control and respect for others’ rights. Communities can also help by reporting crimes, supporting victims and preventing thoughtless behaviour. Therefore, protection depends on both formal law enforcement and individual responsibility. A peaceful society is created when institutions and citizens work together.

Government law তৈরি করে, police অপরাধ প্রতিরোধ ও তদন্ত করে এবং court বিচার ও শাস্তির মাধ্যমে ন্যায় প্রতিষ্ঠা করে। তবে নিরাপদ সমাজের জন্য প্রত্যেক নাগরিকের স্ব-শৃঙ্খলা ও অন্যের অধিকার সম্মানও প্রয়োজন।

5. How should men behave towards other men?

People should behave towards others with consideration, respect and responsibility. The passage says that every person ought to remember the interests and rights of other people, not only his own interests. He should think before acting because even one careless decision may harm another person. He should not steal, cheat, damage property or behave selfishly. These actions destroy trust and peace in society. A good person should also obey laws and follow accepted rules of conduct. However, good behaviour should not depend only on fear of police or punishment. It should come from a sense of moral duty. People in a free society enjoy many privileges, such as freedom of thought, movement and choice of government. In return, they must respect the freedom and rights of others. The passage says that a good citizen should give as well as receive. This means that people should contribute to the community instead of taking benefits selfishly. They should protect public property, help maintain order and avoid thoughtless conduct. In this way, individual behaviour creates the happiness and safety of the whole community.

মানুষের অন্যদের প্রতি বিবেচনা, সম্মান ও দায়িত্বশীলতা দেখানো উচিত। চুরি, প্রতারণা, সম্পত্তি ধ্বংস ও স্বার্থপর আচরণ থেকে বিরত থেকে আইন ও সামাজিক নিয়ম মেনে চলা উচিত।

6. What sort of actions should not be committed in a civilized society?

In a civilized society, people should not commit actions that are unjust, harmful, selfish or destructive. The passage specifically mentions stealing, cheating and destroying the property of others. These acts violate other people’s rights and damage social trust. Thoughtless driving is another harmful action. A driver who moves at full speed without considering other vehicles and pedestrians may cause crashes, injuries and death. People should also avoid any decision that knowingly puts others in danger. A civilized society does not allow a person to use his freedom as an excuse for harming the community. Criminal violence, fraud, damage to public property and reckless behaviour all create fear and suffering. Such actions require prevention and punishment by the government, police and courts. However, law alone cannot make society civilized. People must also develop self-control and consideration for others. They should respect both private and public property. Therefore, the actions that should not be committed are those that deny the safety, dignity and rights of other members of society.

সভ্য সমাজে চুরি, প্রতারণা, অন্যের সম্পত্তি ধ্বংস, reckless driving, সহিংসতা ও জনস্বার্থহানিকর কাজ করা যাবে না। এসব অন্যের অধিকার, নিরাপত্তা ও সামাজিক শান্তি নষ্ট করে।

NU 2015 · Reading Passage — “It is rare to find people who…”
NU. 2015

Reading Passage — NU 2015

It is rare to find people who actually like being single and want to remain single. More often, men and women say that they adore being single, but they spend much of their non-working time looking for a sexual or romantic attachment. Tony is an example. He imagines an ideal life with a woman. His image includes fidelity, marriage, domesticity and total communication. However, he does not want to give up his freedom until he finds a woman who completely matches this image. He has had several serious relationships, but each time he compares the woman with his mental ideal. Reality never matches perfectly. He finds one objection or another and begins to miss his single life. The woman then moves on and finds someone else. Later, Tony begins to rethink the relationship. He realizes that she was more intelligent, prettier and more sexually exciting than he had understood. He thinks that she might have been a good life partner. He even speaks to her about the possibility, but by then she is attached to her new partner, and they are planning to live together. The example shows the conflict between ideal expectation, personal freedom and real human relationships.

Questions & Answers

2. What is the writer’s view of men and women?

The writer’s view is that very few men and women are truly satisfied with a single life. Many of them claim that they love being single and value their freedom, but their behaviour tells a different story. They spend much of their free time looking for romantic or sexual attachment. This suggests a contradiction between what people say and what they actually want. The writer also shows that men and women often carry an ideal image of a perfect partner. They compare real people with this image and find faults. As a result, they may reject a relationship that could have been good. The story of Tony shows hesitation, dissatisfaction and regret. He wants fidelity, marriage, domestic life and deep communication, but he also does not want to surrender his freedom. The writer seems to suggest that human beings need both freedom and emotional attachment. However, they often fail to balance these needs. They may choose singleness when they have a partner and later desire the same partner after losing him or her. Thus, the writer presents men and women as complex, sometimes confused and influenced by unrealistic expectations.

লেখকের মতে অল্প মানুষই সত্যি singleness উপভোগ করে। অনেকে freedom-এর কথা বললেও romantic attachment খুঁজে। আদর্শ partner-এর অবাস্তব প্রত্যাশা মানুষকে দ্বন্দ্ব, হারানো ও অনুতাপের দিকে নিয়ে যায়।

3. What did Tony imagine a life with a woman to be like?

Tony imagined that life with a woman would include fidelity, marriage, domesticity and total communication. Fidelity means faithfulness and loyalty between partners. Marriage represents a stable and socially recognized relationship. Domesticity refers to a shared home life, daily companionship and family responsibilities. Total communication means that the partners would understand each other deeply and be able to share thoughts and feelings without difficulty. Tony’s image was therefore not only physical or romantic. He wanted emotional closeness, loyalty and a settled life. However, his imagination was also unrealistic because he expected a woman to match his mental picture completely. He measured every real woman against this ideal and noticed her weaknesses. If reality did not match his imagination, he began to value his freedom again. This created a repeated cycle of attraction, criticism and rejection. The passage suggests that Tony wanted the benefits of a committed relationship without accepting the imperfections and compromises that real relationships require. His ideal life looked perfect in his mind, but it prevented him from appreciating real women.

Tony নারীর সঙ্গে জীবনে loyalty, marriage, domestic life ও complete understanding কল্পনা করত। কিন্তু তাঁর ideal image এত অবাস্তব ছিল যে বাস্তব নারীর imperfection দেখে সে সম্পর্ক প্রত্যাখ্যান করত।

4. How did Tony’s image of the woman change after she began seeing someone else?

After the woman began seeing someone else, Tony’s image of her changed completely. Earlier, he focused on her faults and compared her with his ideal partner. He thought that she was too thin, that they did not have enough in common and that there were other objections. These objections made him return to his single life. However, when he saw her becoming more involved with another man, he began to reconsider his judgment. He realized that she was actually more intelligent, prettier and more sexually exciting than he had understood. He also thought that she might have been a good person to spend his life with. This change shows that Tony’s earlier criticism was not completely objective. His opinion was influenced by his desire for freedom and his habit of finding faults. When he was about to lose her permanently, her value became clear to him. He even tried to discuss the possibility of a life together. But it was too late because she was already attached to her new partner. Thus, Tony’s change of image is connected with regret and the fear of losing an opportunity.

নারীটি অন্য পুরুষের প্রতি আগ্রহী হলে Tony তাঁর মূল্য বুঝতে পারে। আগে সে তাঁর দোষ দেখেছিল, কিন্তু হারানোর সম্ভাবনা আসলে তাঁকে বেশি সুন্দর, বুদ্ধিমতী ও suitable life partner মনে হয়।

5. How did the writer develop the general statement about being single?

The writer develops the general statement about being single through the specific example of Tony. At the beginning, he makes a broad claim: it is rare to find people who truly enjoy singleness and want to remain single. He then says that many people claim to love being single but secretly look for romantic attachment. To make this general idea clear, the writer introduces Tony as an example. Tony wants an ideal woman and a settled life, but he also wants complete freedom. He compares every real woman with his ideal image and rejects relationships when they do not match. Later, when one woman moves on to another partner, Tony regrets his decision and recognizes her value. This story shows the contradiction described in the opening statement. Tony appears to enjoy freedom, yet he longs for attachment. He rejects a real relationship because it is imperfect, and then values it after losing it. The writer uses this sequence of events, Tony’s thoughts and the final regret to support the general statement. Thus, an abstract idea about singleness is developed through a concrete and memorable example.

লেখক প্রথমে singleness নিয়ে একটি সাধারণ বক্তব্য রাখেন এবং তারপর Tony-র উদাহরণ দিয়ে সেটি ব্যাখ্যা করেন। Tony-র freedom ও attachment-এর দ্বন্দ্ব, ideal expectation এবং regret মূল বক্তব্যকে সমর্থন করে।

6. What is your opinion of singleness?

In my opinion, singleness can be a good and meaningful way of life, but it should be a conscious choice rather than a result of fear, ego or unrealistic expectations. A single person can enjoy freedom, personal growth, career development and independence. He or she can build strong friendships, serve society and live a complete life without marriage. Society should not force every person to marry. However, singleness should not always be treated as proof of confidence or superiority. Human beings generally need love, care and emotional attachment. Some people say that they enjoy being single only because they fear commitment or cannot accept another person’s imperfections. Like Tony, they may understand the value of a relationship only after losing it. A good relationship requires compromise, communication and responsibility, but it can give deep companionship and support. Therefore, neither marriage nor singleness is automatically better. The best choice depends on a person’s maturity, goals and ability to live responsibly. A person should choose either condition honestly and respect the choice of others.

Singleness যদি সচেতন ও ইতিবাচক পছন্দ হয়, তবে এটি সম্মানজনক জীবনযাপন হতে পারে। তবে fear of commitment, ego বা unrealistic expectation-এর কারণে একা থাকা উচিত নয়। Marriage বা singleness—দুটোর মধ্যে best choice ব্যক্তির maturity ও দায়িত্ববোধের ওপর নির্ভর করে।
